I hate to say this, but I don't think Spielberg would have been a good fit for Bond.
Bond movies have a certain style/look that I don't think Spielberg would have been able to capture.
He's too idiosyncratic of a filmmaker to be able to sublimate his style in a franchise like Bond.
Amy Pascal has reportedly said we'll know who the next Bond is by the end of the year.
Next round of auditions should happen this month. Looks like they are definitely looking for a 2028 release (of course who knows when in 2028!)

And only two left on their own terms and never returned to the franchise (Lazenby, Moore). Connery quit and made world headlines, but then came back (twice).
Cubby Broccoli claimed in his autobiography that Roger wanted to keep going and was disappointed to be let go.
I didn't know that. I heard that Moore wanted to leave after Moonraker but they kept offering him more money.

The official line for a long time was that Dalton opted not to return for Goldeneye but it was always clear that this was to spare the actor the ignominy of being officially sacked. There had been speculation about him being replaced after LTK’s American under-performance and this continued all during the legal disputes that stalled its follow-up. The trades reported regularly that studios didn’t have confidence in him as a lead (Cubby, to his credit, was apparently adamant that he had the right man and was fiercely loyal). This intensified after Tim was the lead in the disastrous Gone With the Wind tv sequel, Scarlett, although he was able to sue newspapers who said he was about to be replaced.
It was nonetheless clear that he loved being 007 and in every interview said he looked forward to returning, so the idea that after 5 years or however long it took to announce a new film, he would just walk, never convinced me. It certainly didn’t convince a lot of the press at the time. It was also no coincidence that Cubby was no longer in the frame when Tim left.
Quite a few people pulled me up here for saying this over the years, but the recent retrospective on Goldeneye confirmed that it wasn’t his decision.
As to Roger, there had been talk of him going as far back as after Moonraker, IIRC. We know for sure that James Brolin had an audition after FYEO. I think it’s pretty well accepted that Eon got cold feet at the idea of putting up a debutant Bond opposite a returning Connery in NSNA and that Roger was rehired for that one.
Whether Cubby or Roger is to be believed about the terms of his leaving is for the reader, but Eon giving an official story that spares the actor’s blushes is consistent with how Dalton’s announcement was presented. Cubby got on well with Roger (unlike his relationship with Sean), so I don’t really see why he’d lie in his autobiography (but he could be mistaken, have forgotten, misunderstood, take your pick). The book was published in 1999, so it’s unlikely that many extra sales would have been garnered by spicing up the reason for an actor departing a role over a decade later. But YMVWD.

Roger Moore said in his biography that he was too old because the leading lady's could be his daughter.
I mean to be honest in some cases they could almost be his granddaughter.
He was 30 years older than Carole Bouquet for example.
In terms of being his daughter, this was pretty much the case from the off. He was 24 years older than Seymour, 19 years older than Bach, 20 years older than Chiles etc.
I appreciate this isn't something that was/is restricted to Bond ( my favourite is To Catch a Thief where Cary Grant is 25 years older than Grace Kelly, but only eight years younger than Jessie Royce Landis who plays her mum!).
It isn't even necessarily something from another era, Craig is old enough to be Seydoux's dad after all (though given the number of actresses I adore who are technically young enough to be my own daughter, Ms Seydoux included*, I probably shouldn't throw stones!)
Going forward I do want to see Bond girls who are closer in age to Bond (given they're going for a younger man this shouldn't be too difficult, at least at first). I'm not suggesting their can't be an age disparity, just that it shouldn't always be so pronounced. Hell let's even try and get a Bond girl who's actually older than the guy playing Bond again ( like Blackman, Rigg or Bellucci were)
