There are a couple of people on YouTube making their way through the Bond series and one has just arrived at FYEO.

It's funny to think that I am now older than Moore was when he made that movie and will be the same age as he was when he made Octopussy.

Moore still looked in reasonable shape/age when he made FYEO and Octopussy, but he was definitely looking long in the tooth by the time of AVTAK.

Let's say the films follow the schedule you just posted and Moore leaves the series after FYEO in 1979.

The means the eighties starts with a new Bond in the role as well as a new M, since Bernard Lee was absent during the filming of FYEO and passed away shortly after filming was completed.

What short story do they try to develop into a movie, and who is available to take over the role of Bond and M?

I can't think of any actors at that time who could take over the Bond.

I do remember all sorts of names being linked to the role in the early 80s - even then, a lot of the press felt he was too old. Ian Ogilvy - who had stepped into Roger’s Saintly shoes - was one, Lewis Collins from the Professionals another, Oliver Tobias said he’d be interested. Supposedly Charles Dance, who has a walk-on role in FYEO, declined to audition for the role of 007 on the advice of his then-agent.

I believe Broccoli thought Collins was 'too aggressive' which is an odd negative to think about a guy auditioning to be a government assassin! He would have been very different to Moore obviously, but then so was Dalton.
