The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of The Spy Who Loved Me, and the half-century mark of that film beginning production can't be too far off. I hope the IP owners give TSWLM a proper celebration in 2027 as it's one of the most important movies in the franchise, and arguably Roger Moore's best Bond entry.

Depending on when you mark the beginning of production from, it could be...
  • March 1976: construction of the 007 Stage at Pinewood begins
  • July 1976: second unit films the ski chase at Mount Asgard
  • August 1976: principal photography begins in Sardinia

I'd settle for a decent 1/18 scale model of the Lotus with additional parts for conversion

Forget Moneypenny I demand a Sylvia Trench expanded universe!

I'd actually be okay with that. Hey, how cool would it be to have James Bond married to Jack Ryan?
How hard would it be to make another spy character and cast Blunt? OTOH, while she is widely recognized and generally adored has she carried her own hit? (Does The Quiet Place count? Jungle Cruise doesn't. Did Mary Poppins make money?)

Of course the problem with saying "Let's make a (woman / black / gay / Hindu) James Bond" is that nobody has really been successful at making another male / white / straight / British James Bond. I don't imagine that just officially gender flipping 007 will help with that problem either.

It's not like the Matt Helm or Derek Flint are jumping back onto our screens. The Man from UNCLE and The Avengers (not that one) didn't exactly light up the box office. Although we did get two (three?) Kingsmen movies.

BTW I finally saw The Man From UNCLE (the Henry Cavil one). I'm a little disappointed it didn't do better. That was a lot of fun. I want another one just for more Waverly.

Black Bag is only 90 minutes long? I still need to check that out.

Thing is Eon tried to create a female Bond with Blake Lively in The Rhythm Section. I was one of the few people who went to the cinema to see it! It isn't great but actually it's better than it was made out to be.

Still surprised we haven't had a sequel to Atomic Blonde.

There have been other recurring spy hits. Ethan Hunt, Jason Bourne, Harry Palmer etc. The thing is all of them are inextricably linked to their star. MI might be a huge franchise but can it survive without Cruise? Probably not.

The best thing to happen to Bond was Connery leaving/Moore joining. (unfair to leave Lazenby out given OHMSS is my favourite Bond film but it was Rog who proved the franchise could thrive with another guy in the tux.)

Black Bag was one of my favourite films of last year. Fassbender somehow manages to play James Bond and George Smiley at the same time. I'm really hoping we get a sequel.

There are more than 1 person that have seen The Rhythm Section

I'll certainly give you Bourne. Palmer is in the same category as Helm and Flint (rightly or wrongly). (Didn't they try to make a TV show of Ipcress? I have no idea where to watch it.) Hunt only really became successful when it became the Tom Cruise Amazing Stunt Show.

They TRIED to move Bourne on from Damon. It didn't work, did it?

MI might be a huge franchise but can it survive without Cruise? Probably not.
Which is funny for a series that was explicitly meant to rotate out its team.

I was mostly just making a joke. I say mostly because the more I think about it, the idea of Blunt as Bond actually clicks with me. Not that it matters, we're never getting a female Bond anyway.
