The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

It occurs also that apparently Oscar was Tony Gilroy’s preferred choice to play the lead in The Bourne Legacy, but the studio preferred Jeremy Renner (I’ve always thought it was because he looks a bit like Damon). Isaac does have a supporting role as another Treadstone agent, of course.

My views on the nationality/accent of Bond are pretty firm. As long as he can convincingly play Bond as British, the actor's point of origin is irrelevant. As always I'll cite Renée Zellweger who's so pitch perfect as Bridget Jones that I'm somehow always surprised when she's interviewed and uses her natural accent.

There's probably a nuanced and factual response to be had in here somewhere. But... Does this bode well? My less factual and far less nuanced response is "Ohhhh... That's a BAD miss."

I recall a story from when I was a boy (it might even be true) that someone figured out that they could team up a camel (for strength) with a mule (for direction) to pull a plow through rough earth. The two animals were available (I think this was something about horses being too expensive?) and together they could get the job done.

So: Make the Barbie people team up with Guy Ritchie. They will not only keep each other balanced and hopefully make a great movie (series) without either "side's" excesses, but the making of documentary will be better than Hearts of Darkness!

And cast Henry Cavill.

That article is now three weeks old.

Whatever your view of Barbie (and I enjoyed it a lot) several things are undeniable.

  • It was made by an Oscar nominated writer/director
  • It was perfectly cast
  • It made a shit ton of money
  • It was critically acclaimed
Is anyone really going to complain if the next Bond films hits those four points?

Also the article is talking about the producers of the Barbie film, experienced producers who've produced a whole heap of other films, some of them good, some of them awful, we're not really talking about the creatives (though frankly Gerwig directing a Bond film? Why the fuck not?)

Plenty of reasons to be optimistic about those hires as producers.

1. Pascal has prior Bond cred, having worked on Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall.

2. Heyman had a hand in producing Harry Potter, Paddington, and Wonka - which means the requisite Britishness won't be absent.

3. From what I understand, Pascal was the sole Sony executive who spoke out against Spectre's Blofeld twist (Brofeld) - one of the least popular storylines in recent years. This was revealed in Sony's hacked emails.

4. Barbie was a bonafide blockbuster - regardless of your thoughts on Barbie, if these producers can replicate such success, it's a good thing. We want Bond to stay mega-popular.

See? Facts!

If Pascal was vocally against the Blofeld-as-Bond's-brother twist then my respect for the woman is massive. Probably the biggest reason why Spectre is in my Bottom 3 of all Bond films is because of that idiotic Goldmember-style plot twist, and Mike Myers did it 100 times better in his worst Austin Powers movie.
