The iPhone 5 Thread

Apple CEO promises the Pages app will load up 2.1x faster than before, while Keynote attachments will hit the screen 1.7x faster.

So... that means precisely dick all to anyone who actually uses it as a phone lol

Curious though... I want to know who they got to manufactor the hardware now, as the original A5 chips and previous models, were all built by Samsung... which i'm guessing isn't the case anymore lol

considering it's not even a 16:9 screen on the phone, i doubt the camera will pull it out

M

^ True, but since so many computer screens (and all HDTVs) are 16:9, one would think that the iPhone would include that option. Most people look at photos on screens bigger than an iPhone's, anyway.

yeah... overall, not really impressed with the hardware, or general design here...

From everything I've read so far, the iPhone 5 looks like it would be a good upgrade for me. I've had an iPhone 4 since Verizon started offering them in February 2011. I've purposely held off switching to the 4S because I knew we were just getting closer to the release of the 5. And while I like a lot of the bells and whistles the 5 is offering, and while I can certainly afford it (despite being on hiatus)... I just don't know if this is an "I need" item. My iPhone 4 has been a reliable phone for the past two years; it's still a good phone. Not sure if it's time to retire it yet.

That said - were I to upgrade, would I have to buy my apps all over again for the new phone the way I would if I got an iPad? Or would I be able to transfer all the apps I have on my iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5?

^ AFAIK, you can transfer all your existing apps to the new phone without any trouble. You don't have to buy them again.

thats how it works with android apps... so logically the Apple store should do the same thing

M

The new iPhone seems to run exactly the same apps as the previous ones did. There wouldn't be any need to buy apps specifically written for it (don't think that'd even be possible).

I hope so. I had to restore to factory settings my iPod touch a few months ago and haven't been able to get any of my apps (even the ones I originally bought on that iPod touch!) back on to it. Granted, I haven't tried in a while or researched it, but it's good to know that I should be able to transfer everything with relative ease. Thanks guys.

it's entirely possible to write apps that work on a specific phone / OS... i've done it a few times when working on my Android...

but as far as i know, the iOS6 system runs all previous apps fine

Should be able to do it through itunes on your computer. I've had itunes download copies of purchsaed apps to my computer for backup. Fortunately I've never had to restore my iPhone or iPad (which is more than I can say for my Andriod tablet which has required a factory reset twice).

As to the processor in the iPhone5 there is some discussion at anadtech.com as to what it is - whether is using the A9 core. Guess we won't really find out until some-one gets one and pulls the thing apart.

The 5 is not impressing me one bit. I would skip it and wait for the next one if my 3GS was in better shape.

Are you using iCloud? If you are, just sign into iCloud and it will download everything to the iPhone.

I agree. Yes it's slightly bigger and the processor is faster, a couple of other additions but ultimately it can't fire lasers, so not interested.

While we're discussing all things Apple, I have an issue with iTunes (which I have to say is the worst media management tool I've ever come across). I have a bunch of songs that are listed under Device / Music (I'm referring to folders down the left hand side of iTunes), but have since been deleted from my iPhone 4 (and incidentally, my computer). Now under iTunes I can't delete a song from this directory, but I can under Library / Music, which of course doesn't get into my iPhone.

Problem I have though is after reinstalling my laptop iTunes has syned everything in Device / Music and 'dumped' it on my iPhone, yet my iPhone is empty! Now it says I'm using 8.3GB and my capacity is blown.

Any help?

I like iPhones but I always think iOS is terribly ugly as a phone interface (and I am writing this from my iPad!).

The part of interest to me is the new nano, but my current 4th generation one is apparently indestructible so I'll hold off.
