The Interpretation of Dreams Thread™!

Re: The Interpretation of Dreams Thread™!

I think the question on everyone's lips is, was there a time at which both of your selves were at exactly the same location in your journeys? And if so, did you say hello when you passed yourself by?
Funnily enough, not this time. Maybe it'll happen tonight. :bolian:

When you meet yourself in a dream, listen to what you have to say. :)

What if I says nothing at all? Or if what I say comes out in Korean? :)

I had a fairly obvious dream last night, but it was lovely nonetheless. Right now my kindergarten class is making rock candy as a science/cooking/art/fun project (also ties in with our dinosaur unit by showing how minerals are dissolved in water and then deposit, as in fossilization). Anyway, we have all these jars full of different colored sugar water that are forming crystals. This is the first time I've made rock candy, though, so I've some minor anxiety about it turning out right.
In my dream I messed up majorly, and instead of strings of rock candy the solution came out of the jar as one massive, many-faceted blue crystal ball. And it got bigger, and bigger, and BIGGER. I tried to get my students to eat it but it was growing too large and began to float away. Soon there were different-colored sugar crystal balls floating all around the classroom. It was wonderful!

I like it when you know exactly where your dreams come form. The other night I watched Keeping Up With the Kardashians and I heard a commercial for Cougar Life web site. Hopefully that explains why I had a dream where the Kardashians mother gave me a lap dance.

^ I like it when you can see where they come from too. About 5 years ago I had a dream so obvious I woke up laughing. In the dream President George W. Bush and Dick Cheney (along with an entourage) were chasing my little sister and me through our house. Also in this dream there was a young Mexican immigrant girl living with us who seems to have been the ultimate target of their aggressions. They finally caught me and the little girl and then President Bush smacked the little Mexican immigrant girl across the face!

I haven't had any recurring dreams lately that I've mentioned before (e.g., living in my childhood home, living in a large house and taking a shower in a bathroom without window curtains, etc.).

Lately I seem to have been having short, disjointed dreams, from which I can only remember small details. The other night, it was supernatural in theme. My family and I were communicating with a "ghost" or spirit (I do not recall whose) in another room while we stayed in one room. Just this morning, I dreamt that there was a flying insect (I hate bugs) that landed on me, and I woke up flailing my arms. :wtf:

I haven't gone through all the pages of this thread, so if this one has been mentioned, please forgive me. I'm 53 and i have had a few recurring dreams throughout my life. In talking to friends, i've found that a couple of these are very common:

1. I'm in school (HS) and can't find my locker or i find it but can't remember the combination.
2. I'm in HS and have a test i am not prepared for or do not have my necessary homework.

I also have flying dreams where i can run and then take off. However, i cannot reach any great height and am almost always being chased by someone who can either also fly or can catch me because i can't get that high off the ground.

The last recurring dream that i have is a weird one. I'm chewing gum and i try to take it out of my mouth, however there is so much in there and it's all stuck to my teeth, so i pull and pull and pull, but can't get it all out. It sort of gives me a choking feeling too.

I assume all of these have to do with either stress or loss of control over something in my life.

Just a question. Do you guys use any kind of "reference" book or website to interpret dreams, or do you base your interpretations on hunches or assumptions? It's generally believed that some symbols represent aspects of our waking lives, but I have to admit, dream interpretation is more speculation and not an exact science.

I enjoy interpreting dreams. I don't use any references, and I don't believe that dream elements having specific meanings. That sort of thing seems ridiculous to me.

I believe the elements of a dream are just props used to tell a story, and that dreams are really all about our emotions. We create these little scenarios in our heads to explore things in a controlled setting. Whether it's risk or fear or whatever, we learn something in a dream that we can carry into real life.

If your dream leaves you terrified for example, it can have two effects: you become emotionally hardened from the experience, so you're better able to handle terrors in real life. Or it can make you realise that you're not ready to confront terrors in real life, so teaches you to avoid them. :)

I interpret dreams through intuition. I imagine myself in the dream. I picture it and act it out. Then I pause and rewind and generally speculate what emotions the dream is stimulating, and gradually get a feel of what is really going on.

To me dreams are personal allegories. I think Jadzia has a great method for messageboard threads, but if I were helping a friend in real life, I would ask a lot of clarifying questions. I would use a Socratic method that would result in them revealing things that are hidden in the dream. The subconscious is a part of yourself, so a dream is really a story you are telling yourself. In the end, only you yourself can make the final interpretation.

I've read books, particularly Jung's stuff, but I have become convinced over the years that Jung interjected a lot of his own material into the dreams he analyzed. Freud's analyses are OK up to a point, but I don't think he understood women. I've been trying to learn a James Hillman approach to psychoanalysis, but it's slow going. I ended up with Hillman because I was trying to write about Ezri Tigan, but it's all amateurish on my part, so if I pipe in with anything, consider that I have no degree... at all! I just read weird stuff.

I have a strong distrust of "dream books". I like spiders and so surely me dreaming about a spider would have a different meaning than someone who an arachnophobe dreaming about spiders.

I had a few dreams I won the lottery & the jackpot is always $70 something million. I also see the numbers drawn...but can't ever remember them.

One I had collected my winnings & had a table full of money.

It would be nice if it could come true.

That sounds a little like this computer game I picked up recently. :)

Anyway, this recent dream I had last night was interesting - possibly one of the few times I could control what was in the dream. in this dream I was part of a group of similarly-aged peers, many of whom resembled old school friends and old University friends, off to the local theatre (one of those modern-looking theatres that is all carpet and studio lights inside) to see a play. Bearing in mind that I had recently seen the televised adaptation of "Hamlet" starring David Tennant and Sir Patrick Stewart, the play in the theatre also happened to be "Hamlet", although while I was watching, sneaking into the auditorium and taking up their seats among the other audience members were Tennant and Sir Patrick themselves, listening and watching the players, commentating as it went along, and generally enjoying themselves. The performance was split up with several intermissions during which we all chatted among ourselves at the bar, discussing the play, other things in general, and about each other's lives. The second part of the play continued, and after the second intermission things continued as normal.

The third part then began, which introduced the supporting characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, but interestingly for this part the audience was taken outside to a different stage, with a deep snow setting, some castle ruins, and various added extras in snow suits and dressed up as reindeer offstage, many of whom were played by my friends who were drafted in to take part. I remembered walking around the area, seeing the actors getting ready to perform, then hitting their marks and performing, and eventually found my seat and the play continued, again with Tennant and Sir Patrick in the stalls, watching. It was at this point that I then stood up and left, and somehow found myself forcing myself into someone else's dream.

This someone else's dream also happened to occur in a different wing of the building, and involved myself gatecrashing a dream another person (someone who appeared to be an amalgamation of various close friends and sidekicks over the years) was having. In this dream, this person was watching as an older blonde-haired woman, in her late 30s, was teaching him how to swim in a swimming pool as part of her filming a short public information film. As part of her lesson she removed her heavy coat and appeared completely naked. The other person's task was to clothe her in more fitting attire using tightly-packaged clothing obtained from a set of bubblegum dispensers. The colleague chose a matching set of red lingerie, but I then interrupted and insisted that if she was going to swim, a bikini bathing suit would be more sensible - so I found myself using some spare change to select a red bikini top and bottom, rummaging around on the floor trying to pick up the dispensed items of clothing, then hurriedly handing them over toi the woman and ushering her to a side to some changing cubicles with shower curtains, especially as some footsteps were heard nearby and getting louder, presumably the rest of the film crew looking for this woman.

I then woke up.

EDIT: In response to Miss Chicken:

^^ I'm not saying I believe in "dream books," but the symbol of a spider might represent (in a psychoanalytic sense) something different other than fear or revulsion, as many people seem to be disgusted by spiders. I remember reading that "excrement" could mean money or finance. :wtf:

If there's one thing I believe, it's that dreams are often just reflections or summaries of our daily lives. The majority of non-surreal dreams I experience consist of elements from TV shows I've watched, conversations I've had with people, meals I had on a certain day, etc. I don't believe these day-to-day things reflect certain aspects of my personality or life in general.

Variations on the school dreams are extremely common especially among people who have graduated college. I always have two versions.

1. It is late in the semester and I suddenly realize I have simply forgotten that I was enrolled in school and I am going to fail all my classes.
2. I have one class left to get my degree. I have already gone through the whole process and have my degree for some reason, but I am failing that one class so I guess they'll take my degree back or something. That dream actually seems so real it is a relief to wake up and realize I actually did get my degree.

I tend to have re-occuring dreams a lot based around what I would call futility. I am trying to do something in the dream and it just isn't working. I am tying to make a phone call and I can't push the buttons right or I don't recognize the buttons on my cell phone at all and they are constantly changing. I am visiting my parents in my hometown and I realize at the last second I don't have a way to get back home so I am trying to rent a car and can't find one in the phone book. The silliest and most annoying is the one where I turn on a light switch and the light doesn't go on. I have that dream like once a week.

^ I have another recurring one where i am being chased and i can't get a scream out. I often wonder that if (god forbid) it ever happened, would i be able to scream?
