The Hungy Earth/Cold Blood are Terrible, Terrible Episodes

I think part of the problem with the story is that it felt kind of like a "Pertwee's greatest hits" kind of story. A church, a town guarded by an energy barrier (The Daemons), a drilling project (Inferno), and Silurians (Silurians and The Sea Devils).

Also the Silurian makeup wasn't that great either. The "Mask" should've been the face, instead of what we've got.

I liked these episodes. :alienblush:

Okay, the story was so-so (better than "Beast Below" I thought), but the Eleven cuteness factor was off the scale. :adore:

Why did he blame Eleven for a bad story? Did he feel the same about Ten after Daleks in Manhattan, Fear Her, or The Doctor's Daughter? All three of those were horrendous, but I didn't blame Tennant/Ten for them...

No, he didn't blame 11 for the stories, he just fell out with the fifth season, the writing really, not the Doctor. He likes 11 and Matt Smith immensley. As I said, I tempted him back with the subsequent episodes and he's all back on board again.

That's exactly where I am! And I want to relove this show and am trying to figure out why. I think it's the characterizations and writing. I think Moffat is responsible not because of what he CAN do but what he CHOOSES to do.

You only need watch Sherlock to know he can write well at the moment. I just think RTD redefined Who into something for the 21st Century and Moffat is trying to undo that and get it back to its 20th Century roots. And I'm not "feeling" it.

This very much sums up how I've been feeling about the show. I WANT to like it. And sometimes I do like it. These characters have some great potential, but I feel like the people writing don't actually care about them. Say what you will about Rose, but her stories made me feel for her.

The Hungry Earth had its moments, such as the interrogation scene between the Silurian and the Doctor (who Matt Smith plays fantastically there), and the ending of Cold Blood (post crack) was also quite good, if marred by how horribly tacked on to the rest of the ep it was.

But the bulk of Cold Blood just makes me rage so hard! :klingon: As I said in the original thread:
Boo! Hiss! New worst episode of this series.

Probably the low point of Series 5 for me (along with Amy's Choice) Not truly terrible, just bland beyond belief, which is an accusation I'd lay at a lot of Chibnall's work. 42 was dull as ditchwater as well.

Yeah, this.

Meanwhile, fantastic episode. Anyone who says otherwise is a whiny twat.
Or are you a whiny twat now as well?

Looking back, that was quite an entertaining thread.
Why do people assume Rory will be resurrected? I don't think he will be...
And I got a laugh out of rereading my own joke:
Wondering what happened to the Silurian's 3rd eye.
I'm wondering what happened to the Silurians full stop.
Haha, good one Bones :techman:

Not giving one toss about how it may or may not affect the original story in Classic Who, I found it to be ok though it felt like they could of done a lot more. The best bit of the story was Rory death, which had nothing to do with the 2 part plot so thats never a good thing but it was entertaining enough for 90 mins of Who.

I thought that was one of the worst parts of the story, because it made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Everyone's going "OMG, Rory will never have existed!", and after the Crack envelops him, everything he did still happens, including the engagement ring he gave to Amy. How in the name of bloody hell does this work?!! Then again, that's more of a criticism of the main theme of S5 as a whole than of just this one story; I still reckon the whole business with the Time Crack is a load of contrived, nonsensical twaddle.

Oh, and drilling to 21 kilometres is a record? The writer of this story obviously hasn't seen the classic Pertwee story Inferno, where people dug down a lot deeper than that in the 1970s. A little bit more consistency would've been nice in this regard.

Given that the writer and SM are known to be huge fans of the original series I find it highly unlikely they haven't seen Inferno.

More that they decided that the show having done a story about digging through the earth 40 years ago is not a good enough reason for them not to do another one.

I would agree that the Rory scene was pretty feeble though.

No, no...don't worry. You're still a whiny twat. But, I agree the two-parter was the blandest. Didn't stop it from entertaining me, though. Much like yourself... :p

Can't be bland and fantastic (cue Starkers on the Fifth Doctor). You've failed to live up to your own ridiculous standard of not liking a shite episode and become a whiny twat.

Good stuff.

It was a boring episode. And it felt more like TNG than Dr Who. Swap the Tardis for the Enterprise, and throw Picard in there instead of the doc and you can't tell the difference.

Yeah, the Doctor has always tried to play the part of a Picardesque negotiator between the humans and Silurians as oppossed to his negative attitude toward several other aliens (Although the Silurians are not quite aliens). Never really works though...

For heaven's sake. You both have been told in the past, multiple times, to knock this threadshitting off, and Spiff, Neroon and I are tired of it. You've both earned flaming infractions.

There's an ignore feature on this board. It's really quite handy. Instead of shitting up threads left and right and behaving like petulant children because you just don't like each other, I strongly suggest you use your week-long vacations to consider looking into using that feature. Don't even bother sending PMs to contest the infractions when you come back, either -- take it straight to Moderator Actions or to T'Bonz, because this childlike sniping at each other needs to stop.

Finally, well done, tis about time something was done about those two.

As for the episodes in questions, they were ok, not as good as other episodes in the season and would be in the bottom five episodes of Nu Who.

Hear, Hear! Some of the arguing they do is pretty funny, but it gets old real fast and gets crazily overblown

Okay, sorry to hear my presence is an issue. I'll leave. Take care all. :)
