Elijah Wood believes 'The Hobbit' trailer will debut in front of 'Tintin.'

No surprise there, really. I expected either Tintin, given PJ's producer role, or Sherlock Holmes, since it's a Warner Bros. production. I'm looking forward to it.

Awesome. Yet another reason why I can't wait for Tintin. Between The Hobbit trailer, Tintin, Sherlock Holmes 2, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, December is going to be a sweet, sweet month.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was/is awesome, I didn't realise it and Tintin weren't out Stateside though and when is the latter out over there? - actually don't worry, it helps to read more than the first paragraph of news stories.

I take it the teaser will be out either with Tintin here even though it's nearing its cinema run or with Sherlock Holmes at the end of the month.

I have another book question, I have read the "silmarillion" do I need to read "The Book Of Lost Tales 1 & 2"?

Have you read Unfinished Tales? It fills in a lot of the gaps in The Silmarillion as well as providing backstory for the wizards, Isildur, Galadriel, the Rohirrim, and more.

Because of the fact that The Silmarillion tended to have, for lack of a better phrase, macro rather than micro level pacing, the Lost Tales books can be good for expanded treatments of events such as the fall of Gondolin. I didn't find the first one all that interesting, though.

Unless you are one of the few people that has a negative physical reaction to 3D, I suggest you give it a chance with this one.

3D presentation is a skill that directors are still mastering. Most of the movies you've seen in 3D weren't even shot that way, they were converted. Those that we shot in 3D were shot by people still experimenting with the medium.

The work PJ is doing on the Hobbit looks great. The amount of hardware is astonishing (something like 50 Red Epic cameras that are named), and the amount of care they have going into the production makes other 3D movies seem kind of... lame. He's got his artists drawing blue/red 3D storyboards in pencil, for god's sake, and it's all built up from there.

As an ardent 3D critic, I will say this much: When used properly, 3D can be evocative.

What was it that made me reconsider my position on 3D? Martin Scorsese's Hugo. He did a fantastic job of allowing 3D to become part of the fabric of the film (snowflakes, train steam, crowded station) -- rather than an "effect" to wow the audience. I still think 3D is more gimmick than art. But given how purposefully and successfully Scorsese used the technology, I am willing to give The Hobbit 3D a chance.

^ I explained that in the rest of my post. For me, at least, the use of 3D in Hugo (falling snow, steam, even motes of dust) was evocative of a greater sense of immersion in the film -- rather than an effect that took me out of the film-going experience.

Spoiler: Trailer description

Starts with Bilbo (Ian Holm!!) talking to Frodo (Elijah Wood) at Bag End about his “adventures” and how he didn’t tell him everything. Shows Gandalf making his proposition to young Bilbo and introducing all 13 dwarves by name as it cuts to each.

Bilbo protests of course, because Bagginses belong at Bag End.

The “big” scene is the dwarves, led by Thorin, singing a long slow song. I didn’t catch all the words, but I have to assume it’s from the book. Very ominous tone.

Lots of images in a montage, of travelling and fighting. I think I saw some goblins, and maybe some troll legs, but it went by quickly. Some creepy ruins–looked almost like Moria, but without the majesty. I wasn’t sure if it was underground in the goblin stronghold or something else. Dol Guldur?
There is definitely Rivendell and the shards of Narsil and maybe Elrond, but again, I can’t be sure.

No Smaug at all. No hints at plot, really. No Beorn that I could see. Not even any spiders, although I think I saw some creepy woods. One of my favorite scenes was the dwarves cleaning Bilbo’s dishes after dinner. Expect some acrobatic dishes

Thorin is depicted as a bit callous–he tells Gandalf he can’t guarantee his safe return. Gandalf agrees, and Thorin adds “Nor will I be responsible for his fate.”

It ends with Gandalf saying to Bilbo that if he returns, he may be changed–this is in voiceover while we see THE RING, and Gollum climbing behind Bilbo in the cave.

Can’t wait to see it again!

Sounds pretty neat, though of course a description from a viewer isn't nearly the same as seeing the trailer for oneself. Not much longer now!

Part of me wants the chance to see the trailer in 3D (to see how PJ is handling the medium) ... but not badly enough to pay for a viewing of Tin Tin (if, indeed, that's the film the trailer will be screening with).
