One of my friends lives in an odorless world. He was napping in a car's passenger seat on a business trip and his coworker started napping in the driver's seat - on the highway at 80 mph. One bridge abutment later, he had 70 titanium screws in his face and no sense of smell. :)

What about taste? Can he still do that? I always thought that when your sense of smell dies, so does taste. (That's what happens when you get a cold, anyway.)

He can still taste things like salt and bitter, but they don't let him cook in the kitchen anymore because what he makes is pretty inedible.

Humanity's situation has gotten better over time albeit with some serious ups and downs. In the long term we will be better off.

i agree with this. yeah some horrible shit still goes down but it seems more and more people ask why are things like that. and set off to try and change.

It does seem to be popular sometimes to predict a dark and gloomy future. However, I have a positive outlook. I'm not predicting utopia or everyone being happy all the time but I think things will continue to in general improve. Humanity is like the stock market. In general we're always going up but there are ups and down along the way. Some of the downs can be really bad.

I really don't see humanity becoming extinct. Think of how resilient we are now with our technology. There could be a world wide nuclear war tomorrow and while 99.99 of us might die a fair amount will be able to hide out until they can live safely on the surface again.

It seems impossible to kill off every human. Then in 1000 or 2000 years we will be spread around the entire solar system.

Even if we live to see our sun die I bet we build super huge ships and set off to live on some other far away planet. Although at this point we would have evolved into something that might not be able to be call human anymore.

The best thing to see how we will do is see what has happened in the past 300 years...

I happen to see a rather continuous improvement...over time where many people are living better longer lives....with greater control over their own circumstances...

I believe in a very good future, but it will be a slow process. People will always have their disagreements but in general, the future will be good. There will eventually be little to no racism and I don't believe people will ever enslave sentient robots. And happy people don't fight wars.

Yeah, I was expecting "slightly greater misery" and "slightly less misery" to be the front runners. It seems people expect the status quo, utter demise or total bliss .
No half-measures for this species!

Just remember, as The Gipper said:

"All great change begins at the dinner table...so tomorrow night in the kitchen, I hope the talking begins."

His point? Change in society begins with the individual--and extends to the family--then to friends--and then to the community.

All you have to do is stand up, and be the best you can be--and you will be capable of doing great things. You can make a difference, if you give your all.

Smart man that Gipper. :techman:
