I think the future will be dark tonight, then brighter in the morning.

Nope! My dynasty's palace will be on one of the many terraformed planets we'll inhabit by 2200. Most of the surviving human population, however, will work as slaves on mining colonies, producing ore for - you guessed it - more statues of me.
I'm not entirely sure, but I think Deranged Nasat's the guy we should worry about taking over, what with his "easily likable"-ness and "radiating no sense of competition" to disarm us coupled with his vaguely sinister "large scale changes", "first steps", "contribution to our people" and "hope to do more".
I think he's planning a revolution!!

I believe humanity has a bright and prosperous future ahead. There will be times when we take a step back, but we will always move forward again. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, and while we do falter along the path, and sometimes we fall, we pick ourselves up and push onward. There is no shame in falling, there is only shame in giving up. Humanity will prosper.
Just remember, as The Gipper said:
"All great change begins at the dinner table...so tomorrow night in the kitchen, I hope the talking begins."
His point? Change in society begins with the individual--and extends to the family--then to friends--and then to the community.
All you have to do is stand up, and be the best you can be--and you will be capable of doing great things. You can make a difference, if you give your all.

You know, there are medications for that.
I think there's reason for optimism if you don't expect too much change to happen overnight. As always, some people will suffer and some will prosper. The best we can hope for is incremental improvements in the quality of life for most people, which I believe we are achieving, even if it's not always apparent due to the need to fill the 24 hour news-cycle with drama.

But the correct path "forward" won't necessarily be the the obvious one directly in front of us.
Humans love stating that their race sucks and that the end of the world is coming. They're never happier than when doing so.
Exactly. Pessimism sells. Anger feeds the ego. Hope does not get ratings.
Humanity's situation has gotten better over time albeit with some serious ups and downs. In the long term we will be better off.
It's hard to imagine a day when everyone smells nice.
