The Funniest Movie

Am I the only guy in the world who liked Airplane II better than the original? I mean there has got to be at least one here just for Shatner if not anything else.

And of course for this scene:

Simon: Unger, didn't you serve under Oveur in the Air Force?

Unger: Not directly. Technically Dunn was under Oveur and I was under Dunn.

Simon: So Dunn, you were under Oveur and over Unger?

Dunn: Yep.

Oveur: That's right, Dunn was over Unger and I was over...Dunn.

Unger: So you see, both Dunn and I were under Oveur, even though I was under Dunn.

Oveur: Dunn was over Unger and I was over Dunn.

And who can forget...

DANGER: VACUUM!!!! :guffaw:

"A B-!" "No, not a bah, a bomb."

I wish we had Voice Activated Doors like in that film. "SSH!" "SSH!"

And I love that one bit where they have that piece of machinery that always shows up in every sci-fi show and film in existence, and a technician is seen looking at it and going "All I found is that these red lights keep moving back and forth, aside from that, this thing seems to have no other function whatsoever!"

Shatner's rant about "switches, lights and knobs" is probably his funniest bit in that whole film though. :guffaw:

Addams Family Values. When I was a kid, I never laughed harder than I did at the scene where Wednesday leads an Indian revolt at the Thanksgiving pageant. Now that I'm an adult, the movie still holds up, big time! Even funnier than the Addams clan is the rediculous extremes of the "normal" people, as represented by Joan Cusak, Peter MacNicol, Christine Baranski, & a very young Mercedes McNabb.

Noises Off

For those who don't know, it's about a play that goes horribly wrong.

Noises Off is a much better experience seeing it on stage. You really feel like a fly on the wall as the shit hits the fan, particularly when the director actually walks through the aisles while berating his actors. And the 2nd act backstage is such a panorama of constant pandemonium, that no film camera can truly capture all that madness.

So I Married an Axe Murderer. I guess not a lot of folks liked this one, but my wife and I think it's hilarious. Especially Mike Myers as the crazy Scottish dad:

"Oh, I hate the Colonel, with his wee beady eyes and that smug look on his face. Oh, you're gonna buy my chicken!"

"We have a piper down! Repeat. We have a piper down!"

I loved that movie when I first saw it. But since I haven't seen it since it was originally in theaters, it probably bears rewatching.

The Big Lebowski. There are certain scenes in this movie which make me giggle just thinking about them.

"VE'LL CUT OFF YOUR JOHNSON!"
"Nice Marmot"
"Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature"
"He fixes the cable?"

Great movie. John Goodman is especially hilarious in that film, particularly when he starts randomly making references to Vietnam. Also, Goodman's reaction to the German nihilists: "Say what you will about National Socialism, at least it's an ethos."

Hot Fuzz is really cool. I liked it a lot better than Shaun of the Dead.

Agreed. I think I've figured out why. It's the only Simon Pegg movie I've seen where he isn't playing a complete loser. While his Hot Fuzz character is emotionally stunted, he's still innately likable because he's so good at his job. On the other hand, he's so directionless for most of Shaun of the Dead & Run Fatboy Run that it's hard to sympathize. Also, by playing such a stiff workaholic in Hot Fuzz, he perfectly contrasted with Nick Frost as the amiable moron. In Shaun of the Dead, Pegg & Frost had too much overlap.

Plus, Hot Fuzz has a devilishly sinister performance by Timothy Dalton.

Producers - 1968 version with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel.

Anyone that can watch that without a good laugh doesn't deserve to be human.

While I'm not entirely sold on the whole movie, "Springtime for Hitler" is one of the single greatest movie scenes of all time.

Am I the only guy in the world who liked Airplane II better than the original? I mean there has got to be at least one here just for Shatner if not anything else.

I enjoy Airplane 2 A LOT. But I feel it's not until Alpha Beta that it really kicks into high gear. Most of my favorite scenes ("Shh!", "Get them to blink in sequence!", for example) are from that part of the film. Until then, I feel it repeats too much from the first film and is a bit slow in parts.

Having said that, I enjoy the "Danger! Vacuum" scene as much as anyone else :D. Plus I love the two Chinese guys in the background spitting in sequence :D.

But in the end I just feel that the first one is classic that part two just doesn't quite stand up to. But, again, I still enjoy it a lot.

Dark Comedies:
Fight Club
Network
Being There
Wag the Dog

Free Enterprise was generally too angsty for my tastes. I only really liked the William Shatner scenes. This was back when William Shatner making fun of himself was still pretty new and before geeks became "cool." The best part is Shatner's Julius Caesar rap. "Beware... the ides... of March!"

Wag the Dog is a great dark comedy. It's not really hurt your face from laughing so hard funny but it is solidly, exceptionally funny throughout. Rushmore is another great comedy I would put in that category.

The Hot Shots! movies are great as well. Lloyd Bridges, God rest his soul, was pure comic genius. He had some of the best lines:

"Many of you are wondering what's wrong with my pants. Well, they started running short of material right before they got to the knees...so don't give me any shit."

"I look out there at all you wonderful guys and I think to myself...what I wouldn't give, to be 20 years younger. And a woman."

"It seems that only yesterday I was strafing so many of your homes..."

:guffaw:

A couple other greats that I forgot to mention:
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut

Raising Arizona
[...]
Being There

I'd just like to give a shout out to these 2 movies for very different reasons. My infant sister auditioned to be one of the babies in Raising Arizona. Being There was the movie my parents saw on their first date.

I can't think of any films that I'd rate as exceptional comedies. The form is unsuited to it.
