Spoilers The Flash - Season 3

Another interesting clip from "Duet". It's not all song and dance. Looks like there is going to be some speedster action and some guests from Supergirl:

Just this side of cringeworthy. Joe, Stein, and Captain Jack were straining to sing a song that wasn't in their key.

I thought this episode worked out pretty well. It wasn't an all-out musical, it had elements of a musical that made sense in context of the story. I'm sure those expecting an actual musical were disappointed. There wasn't a lot of singing. The only cringeworthy part for me was Barry singing to Iris at the end. That didn't work.

There was some good humor too. I got a kick out of Kara channelling Wizard of Oz as well as Barry's "I love musicals!".

The story was, remarkably, even more arbitrary and pat than these shows usually are.

Yeah, I actually would've appreciated more singing. They kept talking about how easy it was to convince people in musicals, but if you want to get a point across in a musical, you have to sing it. I guess they wanted to keep it plausible with Barry and Kara not being able to instantly know a new song, but it hampered things a bit.

And it's odd how they chose to interpret the Music Meister. In Batman: The Brave and the Bold, he was just a supervillain who could mind-control people with his singing and make them sing along with him. Here, he's some kind of unexplained, omnipotent cosmic being who isn't even about music since Barry and Kara set the musical theme, and who isn't a bad guy but was just trying to play Cupid. I don't get it. Is he one of Mr. Mxyzptlk's 5th-dimensional cohorts?

Still, it's always cool to see Barry and Kara team up, and the "Superfriends" song was fun. It was also fun to see the Vibe/Kid Flash/Martian Manhunter team-up. I love it when superheroes combine their powers in clever ways. And Cisco made a pretty good team leader.

I thought it was great. It made it more meaningful to have one of the songs occur in the real world. And the fact that we all have music players on our phones now made it easy to justify him having a soundtrack to sing to. And he's the Flash, so he could've written and rehearsed the song at superspeed, though I assume he had to record the accompaniment at normal speed. The one problem was that his voice sounded too processed and studio-perfect.

I'm particularly disappointed that the Music Meister didn't give the exposition to Barry and Kara in song form. I doubt it could've lived up to the original Music Meister song, but it would've been nice. My ideal would've been for it to be the same song with revised lyrics, but they changed the character and his motivation and powers so much that none of the lyrics would've fit.

I really get the feeling the writers phoned this in just so they could get it out of the way and stop fans from asking for a musical episode.
