The Flash - Final Season Discussion

A white lady wrote a story about the authentic Asian experience.

There's another guy in there, fat and Chinese, and his affectionate nick name is "Panda".

Totally racist, but not intentionally offensive.
Have we drifted from the TV show to comics while my back was turned? (it's a Guy Gardener post, of course we have). How is the white make up on the actress playing Lady Chronos "racist", again?

The Lady Chronos in the comics is named Jia, surname unknown. The Lady Chronos in the Arrowverse is named Inspector Tao, first name unknown. They're not necessarily the same character. And the show can't be blamed for any racial insensitivity in the comics.

Although Chronos's look in the show is a fairly faithful interpretation of her design in the comics.

Inspector Tao was the identity of the electrical inspector she stole the identity of to get into star labs. All the other safety inspectors are also called inspector in the imdb credits.

I made an assumption that white face paint is Japanese, and then I looked it up that the actress is Korean, and the Characters are from Hong Kong, which means of Chinese decent.

White Face paint is also Chinese, so never mind, you know except that the character was invented by two white people, but then again, so was Katana.

That was DC's mid-00s attempt to create more ethnic diversity in its characters. Jaime's first appearances didn't fare much better.

Inspector Tao was the identity of the electrical inspector she stole the identity of to get into star labs.

The electrical inspector she knocked out and replaced was named Dupree, according to the credits. So Tao is presumably her own name. After all, if you come from a century in the future, there's no harm using your real name, since there will be no records of it.

So white people can’t create non-white characters?

I didn't make up the new rules.

A group of white millionaires said to a group of white creative people "I don't think that Asian people are giving us enough money, find a way to exploit them, where they think that are being represented by a comic book, even through their new found pride in themselves for having a Cantonese Super hero to up lift their casual existence is a twisted misplaced superficial white lie."

A white person did not just invent several new Asian characters, a white person was told by management that Diversity is important for the Company's bottom line and to do something about it, because of money.

Green is the only colour that matters.

Regardless, the TV show found an Asian actress, the wrong Asian, never mind, and said to her, you don't look Asian enough... How can we make you look even more Asian by utilizing your heredity and customs and national dress, well not exactly your heredity and customs and national dress, because you're Korean, not Chinese, but don't worry, no white people will care or notice, so how we amp your Asian? What about Whiteface? That will make you look 3 times as Asian as you already are, which is not Asian enough, but don't worry, we are the same people (Hollywood) who cast Mickey Rooney as Asian in Breakfast at Tiffany's, so we know what we are doing.

The All New Atom started in 2006, and apparently we still don't know any better in 2023.

I have no dog in this race, I just thought it was "weird".

Did they though?
The actress was given the same make up a any man/woman playing Chronos might get. And you know what Chronos looks like right? White face with clock-hands on his forehead. That it makes her look "more Asian" is you're interpretation.

Chronos was Mick Rory in season one of Legends of Tomorrow, he wore a black steel mask.

In All New Atom, Chronos seemed to wear a mask because his head was covered, and his eyelids and ears were pink. Lady Chronos had white eyelids and the whiteness of her face covering that was almost certainly paint, went all the way up to her hairline.

This Lady Chronos is based on the looks of the comics. White face with clock-hands on the forehead. Mask or make up. Still the same look.

Shocking!!!!! Yeah, some of those looks don't quite translate well to the screen. The clock face actually worked better than I thought.

It looked great.

She was cool.

A Tao in Taoism is the proper order of the universe itself.

Which can be an expression of time?

Time Inspector.

Two huge groups of people wear that much white makeup: Clowns and Geisha.

What did you think of the ethnic heroes from Superfriends?

Apache Chief.

Black Vulcan.

El Dorado.

Samurai.

Racist or not racist?

Exploitative or fair representation?

Well, that's a bit racist, its self.

I saw them first run, They sucked, Well maybe not Black Vulcan,
Names made no sense in relationship to their powers.
Apache Chief. He grows. What does being a chief have to do with that?
Black Vulcan. He should have fire based powers
El Dorado. What does a city of gold have to do with him?
Samurai. Has a bunch of powers but nothing samurai related.

Good intentions badly executed.

I agree with Nerys -- this is a highly ignorant and racially condescending thing to say. As I've already mentioned, full-face makeup with a white base is a staple of kabuki theater, and Lady Chronos's thick white face paint is much closer to a kabuki performer's heavy application of oshiroi (white powder) than the thinner coat worn by geishas.

Face paint is also an important traditional part of Chinese opera. There, white face paint can be used to symbolize cunning, treachery, and villainy, which seems quite appropriate here.

I already said I got that wrong about Giesha, it was a gut reaction that 10 seconds of research fixed.

But you're making my point.

They made a character extra Chinese on Flash, for reasons of race.

They made her extra Chronos.

Extra Chronos is a full frontal of Dominic Purcell.
