The Five Levels of Trek Fandom

What is wrong with you people, do you not understand the WHOLE WORLD is facebook friends with George Takei?!

You don't have to really be his friend. You just have to like him, and if you like him you will see him every single day. His memes will soak into your bloodstream like a narcotic. Really.

OH MY

Okay, let's see:

1. I DID watch the latter half of TNG in college (It started when I was in high school), but I hate Facebook and have never met or had any contact with George Takei outside of watching him as Sulu.

2. I own every Star Trek episode and movie ever made on DVD (TOS twice, both original and remastered), but I hate Facebook and have never met or had any contact with George Takei outside of watching him as Sulu.

3. I am initmately acquainted with every Star Trek series, have an average opinion about IX, but have never met, or had any contact with George Takei outside of watching him as Sulu.

4. I post occasionally about Star Trek here, I DO have this year's calendar hanging in my den, but have never met, or had any contact with George Takei outside of watching him as Sulu.

5. I attended exactly one convention (back in 1994), but have not been to one since, Do not have a blog, never had a pet named after a Star Trek character, and have never met, or had any contact with George Takei outside of watching him as Sulu.

Oh, and I hate Facebook, and am not a member.

What kind of fan does all this make me?

I guess I hover around level 4, even tho while I post passionately on a Trek board, I rarely post about Star Trek.

And I am George Takei.

I think I rate a 4 as well, maybe 4 and a quarter (I have been to 2 conventions, I think I will go to more, but I may be going alone as hubby has informed me that he, like Mr. Nimoy, has "retired" from Star Trek conventions).

But I am not Facebook friends with George Takei...do I need to change that to maintain my Trekkie status? :-)

4ish. Owns all the movies and season one of TOS on DVD. Been known to engage in passionate debates on the internet. Has far too many Trek novels ( but very little tech manuals/nonfiction). Doesn't even use facebook to keep up with people he actually knows, much less an actor he's never met.

I guess I'm not really a fan. I'd be about a 3 1/2 if I were FB friends w/ Takei. Does belonging to the TrekBBS FB group count?

I understand the word FAN and I am happy I am not the uber fan that a lot of people are. I have a friend who is a big fan of Kate Bush. He has Big framed Posters all around his Condo. He has two cats named after songs or albums. We played role playing games (table top Champions) and he would name villains after songs. For instance, we would quail in our shoes when ever he brought out "The Red Shoes" :D

I've seen TOS, TNG, VOY, DS9, ENT, and all the movies. I've played trek RPGs (table top as well as PBeM). I also frequent this Site. No trek con and I would feel like an idiot to get autographs even if I did go.

I guess I'm a mix of 4 and 5. Got all of TOS/TNG/DS9 and the movies on DVD, been to conventions and have signed photos hanging on my wall, but while I do post online about it I don't have a blog and my posts are exactly passionate.

And while I am Facebook friends with a Trek actor, it isn't George Takei. I always thought it was a bit weird, Facebook-friending celebs when you don't really know them and they don't know you...but then I saw my fave Trek actor on there, put in the request, and got it confirmed. :techman:

I think I must be round about 3 or 4. I'm not facebook friends with George Takei but I do follow him, as well as Nichelle Nicholls and Wil Wheaton, on Twitter, if that counts?
