The First Duty? Best Wesley episode?

Just watching it now, I really liked the tone and acting in this one. Even if you're a Wesely hater--and I'm not really one--you'd have to say this was a good episode no matter how you slice it. I enjoy it all the more knowing certain threads and actors/characters were followed up with in later episodes.

Despite the character assassination of Wesley that was Journey's End, I really love The First Duty. It's a great episode through and through, one of the best of its season.

I definitely wouldn't call myself a Wesley hater, and I think he gets a LOT of undue flak. Past the first season they started to turn down the wunderkind crap and he was a lot more bearable in 2. By S3, he was a fairly good character. Still don't think he was as good as any of the adult regulars, but not bad.

I think he was bottom-tier among the crew, but he's still perfectly tolerable, especially by the third season. By the time he leaves, he's perfectly acceptable, though still at the bottom of the list. He doesn't deserve the flak he got and I hope retrospectively he's won some people over in the long run.

I actually thought "Final Mission" was bland apart from a couple of key moments and "First Duty" was overrated upon recently seeing them for the first time as a mature adult though. Too many very trite and predictable scenes in the former, and a few too many in the latter as well. "First Duty" is still a solid episode for me, though. Good moral from a wonderfully-composed Picard scene.

"The First Duty" is certainly up there as far as top Wesley episodes, though it's been a few years since I last watched it. I've been revisiting season one recently and was reminded what a nice episode "Coming of Age" is for the very young acting ensign, due to his testing, his concerns, his talk with Worf and him ultimately losing the competition. "The Dauhphin", "Evolution" and "The Game" were also good for his character...

One scene stands out for me in this episode. Picard finding out what really happened and lecturing Wesley in the ready room is superb, the acting in particular.

I started a thread a while back in General Trek called "Best Ass Chewing" and this was definitely among 'em ...

lol cool, whenever Picard rips into someone I always feel like he really means it, such is the power of Stewart's acting, another fine example is when he rips into Riker in The Pegasus or when he rips into Nikolai Rozenko in Homeward

Sorry going off topic a bit here

That scene is absolutely timeless. Very, very good. It blows away the rest of the episode, which like I said, I don't dislike.

I still don't get all the hooplah over "Final Mission", though. A couple of nice Picard/Wesley moments didn't make up for a really boring rest of the episode. To each their own, though.

Hmm I think the "hooplah" over that particular episode would be the development of their relationship, Wesley takes care of the dying Picard, Picard reveals his pride in Wesley, I dunno I see it as a solid episode, not the best though I guess.

Final Mission is decent, though I can't figure out wtf the stupid water shield is for!

The water shield kind of baffled me, the fact that Wesley figured things out at the end actually didn't irk me (it was thematically fitting with the goings-on) but the issue of it not being explained (unless I just missed the explanation altogether due to exhaustion that evening) also annoyed me. The guest star didn't do anything whatsoever for me and his 'we-have-to-do-things-my-way...oh-look-I'm-dead' was cringe-worthy.

I don't know, I'm probably in the minority on this. I know it's a well-received episode. I wish I could share in the enthusiasm.

It was nice to see Wesley not written as a total goober for a change, as that was extremely rare. Great episode. 9/10.

I remember the general plot of this ep, but haven't seen it in a while. I do remember the last ep with Wesley where he runs off with the traveler. From personal experience, I can empathize with Wesley about how living up to other people's expectations can wear you down after a while. So at least in my eyes, I can't see him as a totally detestable character.

"Final Mission" was better. It made you understand that all that time Wesley was bugging Picard he really didn't mean it, he was just being a kid.

This one is so good I can't get through it without crying.
