The Final Three Poll

For the "plebs" who've been fans since 1966, sure.

Watching kewl ships shoot their phasers and rip off old movies is so much more interesting than real storytelling - hence "Doomsday" and "Balance" make the list.

It wasn't just that, Dennis. For me, the appeal of those shows were NOT the "kewl 'xplosions" bit. As a chick, that stuff doesn't do anything for me. (And I've not seen the movie on which BOT was based.)

It was the characters which did it for me.

BOT - the Romulan Commander. He impressed me so much that I wrote a story about him myself. He was one of the Romulans who got me interested in Romulans (others being non-canon written Romulans.)

Doomsday - Matt Decker. Specifically, his anguish over his decisions.

There are what, 7 original stories? It's not just the story. There are many shows which have good stories but if the characters aren't compelling, I won't watch.

There had better not be a tie!

This is supposedly over Thursday evening. If there is still a tie, I'll wait for Friday evening to close. If there is still a tie then, then everyone will just have to deal with the fact that TOS fans can't make up their minds. :p

And I mean that in a kind way. Both of those episodes are excellent.

Balance of Terror gets my vote, just ahead of The Doomsday Machine. I've never been a huge fan of 'City..' - the cinematography is excellent but the story has a few too many holes for my taste.

My rankings:

1 - City
2 - Balance
3 - Doomsday

My rant:

This was a tough decision, but when I really thought about it, I made it easy for myself. When you take in account of the myriad of subject matters (time travel, changing history, peace vs. war, sacrificing a love, depression era America, and the strong relationship of the Big 3), the only thing that was lacking was that good old starship battle between good and evil. However, it was the cerebral nature of this episode that can transcend any good piece of fiction. Throw in a famous actress, that was icing on the cake to make it the best of TOS.

Balance of Terror will always be a favorite episode of mine because it has the battle and the backstory of racism/war that will always be present in our society, no matter how advance we become technologically.

Doomsday Machine is another classic just like the above which I can watch from beginning to end without thinking that there is a dull moment in the show.

Thanks for the poll!

DH-

While I truly believe BOT is a better episode, I love your opinion and breakdown.

Both are worthy and DDM is a nice third.

Well, it's time for me to call this one, but I hate ties. And having run off poll seems silly to me. So, to be fair, I will check this Saturday morning, and if it's still a tie, then it ends in a tie.

So, unless yall object, we'll give this one another day for a stray vote or two.

I think you ought to have a run off. You said you were going to call it Thursday night but didn't. The next vote that came in after that should have settled it, imo.

Well, it's Saturday morning and I'm calling this one.

It's a tie as of the time stamp on this post. TheLonelySquire, I didn't call it Thursday night because I posted the original poll on Friday morning, so the poll was only six days old then. I leave all them up for seven days.

So, what do yall want to do? Do you want a run off poll, or shall we just leave it at a tie?

I'd suggest a runoff. Those 21 TDM votes can't split evenly if they all vote again.

And this is unpinned now, BTW.

"City" is ahead now, I notice.

Yes, but after I called the vote. So, I guess we'll have a run off. I swear, when I'm done with all the polls in the various forums, I'll never do another poll in my life.

You had to learn the hard way, didn't you? ;)

I did it exactly once, in the ENT forum to determine which episodes from one season should have been nominated for Hugo awards.

Never again.

Nonetheless, it received the most votes, which is what's really of more interest than what's declared to win or not.

Damned hanging chads.
