Spoilers The Expanse Season 5

I want to feel sympathy for the Belters but their terror tactics are too much. Killing millions is not gonna solve their problems. It just makes things worse.

Marco Inaros and his merry band of terrorists are not the Belt and do not represent the Belt. And I hope Earth and Mars don't feel forced to respond as if they were. Of all the stunned faces of Belters watching the news and/or Marco's speech, we didn't see what their true reaction was. There certainly were those he won with his words, those he won even without it, but I'd hope they don't outnumber those who felt horrified. Even if they do, there would be an overwhelming feeling of fear of what Marco brought to them now rather than a happiness that the Belt struck back.

If he gets away with what he did, his support among the Belt will grow certainly. The audacity of his actions definitely shocked many Belters but if he goes unpunished, many Belters might feel that his actions were right all along.

And many more belters (especially those that are station bound) are likely to be equally inclined to disavow and directly oppose him, if for no other reason than they really don't feel like getting nuked by the UN fleet in retaliation.
It's easy for his "Free Navy" to feel all secure and untouchable with their highly mobile, well armed fleet of Martian stealth ships able to flit about the system as they please, but for the belters on places like Tycho, Ceres, and Ganymede, they're going to be feeling *very* exposed right now.
Even the ones that might rally to his cause may wain in their support if he fails to protect them from a UN retaliation. His fleet can't be everywhere at once and the UN still has the numbers to at least blockade the major hubs until they draw him out.

Wow, this season has been fantastic so far! Just really enjoying it! So glad that the showrunners were aware during season 5 that they had one more and have a plan.

Well in BSG they also had a plan, and that didn't work out ;)

Speaking of BSG, this is close to replacing it as my favourite of the 21st century. I think The Expanse is consistently better, but BSG has better highs, as well as much better acting (how can you compete with EJO) and cooler space battles. I'm actually now dreading watching Discovery, even if I think it's just ok because now I want a Trek show as compelling and well thought out as this.

I also just bought Leviathan Wakes, I was gonna put it off til lockdown was over, but I'd like to be in new territory for my holiday in the summer.

I think The Expanse has already surpassed nuBSG as my favorite 21st century SF show. You're right that BSG had higher highs, but it had really low lows, too. I feel like The Expanse has been more consistent after a sluggish start, and has improved with every season.

I think the Expanse is interesting because it has two antagonists. Marco Inaros is the immediate one while whoever killed the ring builders are the more distant threat.

Just like the earlier seasons, where you had Jules-Pierre Mao and the protoculture as the two threats.

Agreed. The Expanse and nuBSG are right up there in the top tier with me. I do like Discovery. Although, the current season has kind of fallen apart by the end. However, I notice that watching The Expanse and Discovery at the same time, Discovery pales in comparison.

The novels are great. I remember reading the first a few months before the show started. Took me a few days.

Lately I've been thinking about rewatching BSG - but I think The Expanse could be my favourite non Trek science fiction show of all time. It has pushed ahead of other science fiction in terms of quality.

New episode was pretty standard I thought, but kinda expected after the previous episode.

Was the prison complex surrounded by water in the previous episode or was that because of the tsunami?

It was on a coastline......maybe even an island.

I assumed we were simply looking in the opposite direction. But an island would put them in an even worse spot in the escape.

The settling down was expected after last week, but I'm kind of surprised we didn't get anything about the turmoil in Earth's leadership and the attack on Mars parliament or the turmoil there. It feels too settled down if you're only looking it from the Belters (and escaping prisoners') side, even with the escalation of the tensions there.

I liked it. It's just strange looking only at a place that's about to explode, when there are places where the fires from the explosions are still raging, literally and figuratively.

I find the series is eminently rewatchable, which I didn't find with a lot of nuBSG.

I could be wrong but I think they purposefully kept all the information away from the viewers, so we got the same feeling of confusion and isolation that the characters we were following felt. They're all pretty separated, isolated and miles from support, even Holden feels vulnerable at the moment. I desperately wanted to know more about what happened on Earth, but it left me feeling as confused as the characters - which, as I said, is what I think they were going for. This is why there was no Avasarala in the episode, she very likely it being kept up to date on the situation with the first reports and true casualty numbers.

I'm really interested to see the devastation and Earth's reaction, there are gonna be billions dead in the long term.
