The DS9 Conspiracy

BolianAuthor

Writer, Battlestar Urantia
Rear Admiral
This is something that I remarked about in the TNG forum, but I wanted to present it here, to see what all the fellow 'Niners think of this as well...

What if, during the run of DS9 (perhaps even during the Dominion War), the "Conspiracy" bug-aliens came back, and infiltrated the highest ranks of the UFP and Starfleet again? How would that have affected the Alpha and Beta Quadrants at the time?

Or here's a trippy thought... what if they (the bug-aliens) were actually the ones controlling our leaders, encouraging us to go to war with the Dominion, or even using us to make the first move, and start the war? What if the bug-aliens had actually tried someone else... what if they decided to infiltrate the Cardassian leadership, and used them, to join the Dominion against us?

Lots of possibilities, and I'd like to hear your thoughts. :bolian:

It would have felt redundant, I think. The changelings were already serving that function.

Did we actually -need- encouragement to go to war with the Dominion? I think their intentions were rather clear pretty much from the point of first contact.

You do realise

That is a plotline of the DS9 relaunch novels in 'Cathedral', 'Lesser Evil', 'Unity'

I also think it would have been redundant.

First, we've already seen Starfleet defeat the bug-aliens in an attempt to infiltrate the upper echelons of Starfleet Command. If they did come back (I've heard they do, but I haven't read any of the DS9 relaunch, so please forgive my ignorance) I would think they would try a different tactic.

Second, DS9 had episodes dealing with a conspiracy within Starfleet Command. Another one was unnecessary.

Third, like Kelso said... The changelings were already serving that function.

I agree with the above sentiments that it feels rather redundant. It would also needlessly crowd the already very busy plate of DS9.

Also
it starts in "The Lives of Dax: Sins of the Mother" and concludes in "Worlds of DS9:Trill:Rejoined." And the Parasites (the Conspiracy aliens) motivations are fleshed out and further explained.

I did not realize... as I have not read any of the relaunch novels. :)

With DS9 it would have been just too much. I do think that it would have made for a good 2 parter or a small story arc in Voyager however. Voyager has to stop an invasion of the Alpha quadrant before it even begins.

And as well..

That amongst their many admirable qualities, the Cardassians are immune to the Parasites due to those wonderful necks of theirs...
