I was talking to a family member who lives on the Mainland and the fact that Tasmania has not had a Covid case this year came up. She retorted ‘that is because Tasmania won’t take international returns and she started bitching that Tasmania has not pulled its weight.
This annoyed me. Tasmania did not take international returns for the majority of last year because we did not have a viable international airport to do so. Technically the airport became the Hobart International Airport in 1983 but we only got 2 international flights a week from New Zealand and those stopped in 1998. Then we had 23 years of no international flights at all and thereby missed out on a lot of international tourism.
Before Covid the airport was being upgraded to become an international airport again with the plans to resume flights from New Zealand and have regular flights of tourists from China. The first stage of the upgrade was finished in December and the Tasmanian government offered 450 hotel quarantine places.
We received a flight from India with 118 people on board. Quite a few of these people complained about the flight from India to Tasmania being too long and also about the fact that Tasmania was too far away from where they wanted to be. They would have been happier quarantining in Darwin or Perth.
As a result the other flights to Hobart were cancelled and people started complaining again that Tasmanians weren’t pulling their weight.

I don't think any reasonable person would have a crack at Tasmania for not taking internationals.
