Australians to be blocked from Amazon US

I got an email a couple of hours ago saying all Amazon international sites would be blocked, but whether this just means the US-centred sites, or all Amazon shops worldwide is unclear. The media reports I've seen are focusing on the US site, so who knows. We'll be able to buy internationally through the Amazon Global store on Amazon AU, but I'm wary of the range they'll have available, compared to the US site.

Given Australia is tied to Europe for a variety of electronics reasons either the Global Store will need to host European goods, or just leave the various Euro stores available direct.

EDIT - Good thing I've got various redelivery addresses around the world. Hopefully I can still use them.

I'm hearing disturbing reports that people are already receiving word from their redirection service that they will have new restrictions. This is such bullcrap. All because that giant sack of dog-mess Gerry Harvey had a whinge and then "donated" a bunch of money to our esteemed politicians.

Same here it's to do with GST. The email I just got mentions the GST as being part of the change and why this is happening.

Seems the govt wants a slice of the online sales action.

As a result of changes to Australian GST law, on 1 July 2018 Amazon’s international shopping options for Australian customers will change.

While we regret any inconvenience this may cause, from 1 July we will be redirecting Australian customers from our international Amazon sites to amazon.com.au where you can shop for products sold by Amazon US on the new Amazon Global Store, available today. We have taken this step to provide our customers with continued access to international selection and allow us to remain compliant with the law which requires us to collect and remit GST on products sold on Amazon sites that are shipped from overseas.

Amazon Global Store will allow Australian customers to shop on amazon.com.au for over four million items that were previously only accessible on amazon.com. This selection is in addition to the more than 60 million products that are already available on amazon.com.au across 23 categories, including books, fashion, toys, and electronics.

I think it depends if you sell them inside Australia or not. Not sure if people buying from overseas stuff from Australia pay GST.

Book Depository is an Amazon site. I did buy some books from them via the Amazon AU site, so presumably they were competitively priced (I would think I’d have compared prices).

what are prices like for books and CDs now?

Was looking at one of the last books in bought in Australia (December 2008) that was part of John Birmingham's Axis of Time Trilogy and paid $19.95 for it and CDs were around $30.

I rarely buy any books in Australia unless they are second hand or on sale. The last book I bought at full price was a book written by my cousin but that was a large hardback book about Tasmania’s vanishing towns and cost $50.

I suppose that a recently released large paperback would cost around $30.

95% of the books I buy come from Book Depository, Wordery or AbeBooks.
