Well, an update. It all seems to have gone well, and the kidney is functioning. He was as high as a kite on morphine afterwards and was going "whee!" It's been stressful, but the worst seems to be passed.
Still, this year has not been fun, and today's news hasn't helped. At least we're here and not there.

I'm so glad it went well Australis! All my hopes for a good recovery. How long will he be in hospital?
In for another week, then he has to go every 2nd day for a month for checkups, not practical when we live 12okms away, so him and his wife will stay down there for a further 2 weeks then transfer to a local hospital, which will also mean normal home stuff then too.
That's good to hear Congrats Australis on the good news.
I'm glad and I hope this will be the beginning of a new life for him!
Another terrible incident - it looks like a man set himself on fire at a bank in Melbourne and there has been many injuries including some people being seriously burnt.
What's with that?

That guy that set the bus driver on fire. Looks like he might get off on a mental health defense.

Apparently the guy was broke. Well that is what I saw on the news.
Well that's more then they said today on our local news here in SA...
I'm still puzzled over the use of the word "allegedly" when we know what he did.
Just terrible. I'd like to think he was just there to cause trouble at the bank, but to injure all those people, including children...
It's that familiar mentality of "I'm going down so may as well burn the world down with me"
It seems that he is a refugee from Burma/ Myanmar.

You can bet the govt. will try and get some mileage out of this "stinking refugees" and all that.
I have no doubt he meant to set fire to himself, I am just not sure he knew it would end up spreading to others - was it only meant to be self-immolation or was he trying to kill others?
As he is still alive, and will probably live and be tried, we might have an idea some day.
