The Down Under Lounge

If Abbott loses the leadership his will be the shortest prime ministership since 1945.

Shortest elected.

Yep. Interestingly he will be the fourth longest serving Liberal leader federally. His 5 and a bit years is well behind the 3rd placed leader, Fraser, with almost 8 years.

Abbott's legacy could be : best opposition leader in history, but one of the most disappointing PM's.

I used to despise chicken salt on chips but thanks to other people ordering it all the time something has clicked in my brain and now I seem to actually love it.

It's like the hot chips and the chicken salt are in some gourmet love clinch of 621 popper heaven.

There is only one traditional corner store hamburger joint left in this whole city, and it provides chicken salt in huge plastic tubs. Pouring this quantity of chicken salt on chips should come with a health warning, but it tastes so damn good. I've been known to drive miles out of my way for a fix

As if any further evidence were needed to show why Melbourne is the best city in this country!

Also miss the way you can walk in to hamburger places there and specify how many dollars woth of chips you want depending on your hunger level .

Speaking of all things chips, I miss that Lord of the Fries place across the road from Flinders Street station with those chips drowning in vinegar:drool:.

Meantime, back in spill world, Abbott has hit the panic button, bringing the spill forward to tomorrow morning. I love Malcolm "butter wouldn't melt in my mouth" Turnbull's very cheeky reaction : "well he's made another Captain's pick", reminding MP's why we're at this point now.

Where are you that you can't order chips by how many dollars?

Lord of the Fries has good chips, but the one time I ordered a hotdog it was awful. Toppings were excellent but the hotdog itself was totally mushy, like tofu consistency. This put me off ever having them again, wheras normally I would have slowly worked my way through the hotdog menu

What I wonder about the Prince Phillip deal is did anyone yesman him on it and say it was a great idea?

Inner city Sydney. All the old small business burger places have been converted into Sushi bars or Subways around here. The only burger options are really Maccas or Grilld, so no $5 of chips wrapped in paper at places like those.

I have been thinking about starting up a hot dog place. I'm a big Hot Dog fan..first think I do in the USA is go to Pink's hot dogs . Any love for hot dogs here in Australia?

As for Prince Phillip, whoever knew about it and didn't have the guts to say "err...Tony, you might want to re-think this one" has probably cost him the Prime Ministership.

Abbott bringing on the spill is looking like a bit of a blunder. If he thought he had the numbers, he may not any more, with so far two MP's expressing their disapproval, one of them, notably Arthur Sinodinos, who looks up to his neck in carrying out this leadership change.

It's a crazy atmosphere, and there are wild smears flying around everywhere, but, for what it's worth, there are rumours that Laurie Oakes is about to deliver the coup de grace to Abbott with an explosive relelation tonight. I am a bit more wary of defamation laws than some other posters on here, but there is speculation it may relate to an allegation previously raised in this thread. If true, a resignation could be the only result. We shall see I guess.

Yeah, hotdogs, dodgy. Gave 'em up years ago.

Chicken salt is great. Lifts working class fish and chips into the gourmet range for the working class. I can say this coming from that financial region.

I laughed out loud when Abbot said he didn't want the Government to be like Game of Thrones. Does that mean he's Joffrey?

Oakes's revelation: the Credlin rumour is true?

Unfortunately Canada has followed the U.S more than U.K and Australia so that sort of option isn't available and I miss it.

Then again I miss the days when we could get enough chips for a family of 6 plus potato fritters for just $5. Of course I was only 12 at the time.

Though becasue of my father's blood preasure we tended not go salt (chicken or otherwise on the chips) and I have to admit I've generally carried that on which helps my blood preasure.

Supposedly it gives gives the Lib MPs less time to talk amongst themselves about tossing tony's arse out the P.M's chair.

But hey they can say they didn't change leaders unlike Labor but at the end of the day the government stinks like last weeks fish and nothing is gainned by sticking with an unpopular leader and even more unpopular policies.

hot dog sasuage, bun, bacon, cheese, onions = hot dog with the lot = good shit.

Oakes's revelation: the Credlin rumour is true?

The comment abbott = joffrey has been made a number of times (I said on another side that after Abbott's GoT comment some-one should point out he's like Joffrey right down to being a real bastard).

The rumour the Credlin and Abbott have been having an affair? That could make things real interesting. Last affair in Australian politics that made news was Cheryl Kernot and Gareth Evans and it pretty much destroyed both of their political careers.

Though there was a rumour about John Howard and Pru Goward which is supposedly why he never lived at the Lodge - his wife wouldn't let him.

An affair with Peta Credlin would be boring news - I want it to be a photo of Abbott getting dressed into his furrie costume.

Hotdogs are slightly more common here than years ago but you're more likely to find a kransky or bratwurst. You can find tacos in Melbourne easier than hotdogs now, amazingly. Costco hotdogs are pretty good, as in the hotdog itself. The problem is a lot of the time the hotdog is crap even if the bread is nice. I think if you were going to open a hotdog place you'd have to be on the gourmet side of it and offer other kinds of sausages as well as people just aren't that fond of hotdogs it seems.

A great one is truly a wonder though IMO, but of course there needs to be mustard.

My wife and I must be the only ones who don't like Costco hotdogs. Could send you the packet I've got in the freezer but AQIS might have something to say about it.

They certainly aren't the best I've had but compared to the soggy black and gold brand crap you get normally they are great. GREAT. I think they are beef though?

In the Melb CBD I found a place called Snag Stand(?) you might like -- gourmet sausage sandwiches -- not cheap though! As a fellow hot dog connoisseur let me know what you think if you try them.

Hot dogs and sausage sandwiches mmm..yummm. Thanks for your feedback guys. I think more Aussies would go for them with fresh ingredients, and more toppings than just the onions and mustard you get at the footy.

Back to Mr. Abbott, and the Oakes thing was a non-event. Just the rumour mill out of control. All Oakes said was that he thinks Abbott will survive tomorrow, but momentum is heading Turnbull's way.

There seems to be a view at the moment that Abbott will hang on, but these things are had to call -- the Libs don't have to vote in factional blocks, so nobody really knows.

All eyes on Newspoll, which is due soon.

Yep I know that place, never bought anything though. I am not really a sausage fan at all other than the occasional winter day when there's lots of onions in front of Bunnings. But only if there is onions and mustard. I have always meant to see if they did hotdogs as well and now you've inspired me to take a look.

The problem with Melbourne is there is so many fantastic and cheap things to eat that sausages of any kind are not enticing. Unlike at Bunnings.

She did a show some time ago, Fashionista. Amusing. She's very good at her job. No idea who Jeanette Francis is though.

As widely expected, Newspoll is absolutely horrendous for Abbott.

2PP : ALP 57-43
Abbott : Satisfied 24, Dissatisfied 68.

To put that in context, a 57% 2PP vote for the ALP would give it the biggest electoral win in history.

As for Abbott, he is now firmly in Gillard territory in terms of his popularity.

I'm not sure what Abbott sticking around achieves from here. Time for a Howard or someone to get on the phone and tell Tony to make a dignified exit?

Howard probably isn't the best person to make that phone call. He never did like Tony Abbott. He's also come out and said that the budget measures Abbott is putting in place are unnecessarily strict. Not exactly supportive of Abbott. Abbott should listen to Howard but he won't.
