The Down Under Lounge

Sad news today. Author Peter Corris, 76, died in his sleep.

Since the 80s he's been writing the Cliff Hardy detective novels, which have been a staple in my reading life, a hard boiled noir-type series set mostly in Sydney that really brings the city to life. They're pretty good, easy to read, and filled with all sorts of twists and turns. Recommended. He finished the series with last year's novel, Win Lose or Draw.

Now Cliff can retire and play with his grandkids, and never worry about being punched in the face again...

:(

Me mate on the friendlyjordies vids in YT summed it up. The LNP says Labor is beholden to the unions because most of their funding comes from them. Which means it comes from ordinary people (yes, simplification but I'm okay with it). The LNP funding comes from what we call the Big End of Town - corporations, multimillionaires and billionaires, and overseas.

More on point, unions enforce wages, OH&S, job security and worker treatment, which is an affront to all the LNP donors mentioned above.

A lot of the big wheels in US business are heavily influenced by Atlas Shrugged. I can't stress enough - read this. It will take you WEEKS, but not only does it point out the egregious fallacies in a vile, distasteful, unrealistic novel, it also explains why it is wrong in so many ways with the US as influenced by the crap fanbois of said book, who are in the main horrible people. Trust me, it takes a while but it fills in so many gaps.

Yeah it's one of those books that takes a month to read or more. Have always meant to get a copy.

Don't bother, there's enough in that website, and explanation around it, to get everything you need to know. Plus some of the comments are damned funny and insightful too. Think of it as a deep dive into the current state of US economic politics. You'd find just reading the book either abhorrent or boring. Read the first post, that'll give you a feel.

Labor have never hidden their ties to the the union movement - unlike the libs who raised the donation limits to hide who gave them money.

There as an article on the ABC the other day from michael yabsley who's a big time lib fundraiser saying he thinks the rules need to be changed because at the moment they are open to abuse. But I wonder where he was when the rudd govt tried to restore them the old levels.

yabsley also said for the good of the party (in another article) that abbott should quit politics. For the good of the liberal party, it would be for the good of the country.

newspoll results are out and the pundits at news corpse are gonna have a hard time. Remains at 54/46 for Labor and while both they and the lnp have 1 point increase in their primary vote, the alp is still in front on 42%.

guess it's a good think that scumo is ahead as preferred p.m - will give the murdoch hacks something to crow about.

Dutton doubling down because the Au Paire thing won't go away.

What the hell is he accusing the former Border Force guy of? Isn't that woman an adult so what the hell is going on here?
