The Dominion War

Yeah quite right, DS9 got to it's best at season 6, floundered a little during the middle of season 7, and then came that ten part Dominion story arc. Which was so creative.

The Seventh Season...was bad.
The Ezri Worth continuous was tiresome for me.

But in both Season 6 and 7 only had 66 percent of the episodes that had anything to do with the war so you can imagine how this was when this was airing...the number of filler episodes in a row was a bit difficult to endure.

I don't agree, I found it more realistic. War's are generally seventy percent sitting around thirty percent fighting.

How good were these episodes. DS9 improved with age so much, absolutely first rate.

Well, your opinion certainly reflects the prevailing feeling around here. IMHO though, the series peaked in seasons 4-5, and 6-7 (containing the War proper) were not as good.

Agreed, though I'd include seasons 2 and 3 as well. The "core" season of this show, 2-5 were very strong, probably the most consistently good of any Trek series. I think when they went to the war, it actually declined and season 7 up until the Final Chapter episodes was a step down.

Plus, my biases revealed, I didn't like seeing Trek turned into a pure war show.

For my money, the best part of the series was mid-S5 through mid-S6. Pure genius.

But it was all worth watching, at least once. Even the bad episodes! :rommie:

Don't forget ten percent playing baseball in the holosuite. ;) The Dominion should have attacked during the seventh inning stretch.

I enjoyed that aspect of storytelling, even though ultimately I believe STar Trek should not be a war show. My greatest disappointment with the Dom War, was they didn't touch on it enough in the STNG movies...the annoying notion that the TV and Movie divisions of Paramount should stay separate robbed us of an epic conclusion on the big screen of the entire affair.

I agree- then you know what *you* liked... it'd be bad to miss out on something just because it wasn't to someone else's taste.

IE- a lot of people seem to like The Visitor... I don't... it'd be terrible to avoid it for years, be forced to watch it, then find out it's good.

Huh? You wanted the Dominion War to be finished in a TNG movie? Or that Insurrection should have been a DS9 movie?

Although I found the War arc a very compeling story and loved most of the episodes dealing with it very good, I do find it a shame that some fans seemed to like DS9 for the battles. Some of this shows finest hours were during the first two seasons.

The Dominion war is what makes DS9 my favourit Star trek Series, it lead to what i think is the best episodes of Star trek ever In the pale moonlight and It's only a paper moon.

ugh. I hated "it's only a paper moon," which reminds me of another reason why season 7 is a big step down. Too much Vic Fontaine.

Yeah, I agree with that. I didn't get why there was so much Vic. I always felt like he was doing what should have been Quark's job.

And something I found ironic about S7... Terry Farrell left DS9 because she said Jadzia didn't get enough storylines. So as a result they had to devote a bunch of storylines in S7 to introducing Ezri. "Prodigal Daughter" and "Field of Fire" could have easily been Jadzia episodes. And then it could have been Jadzia who went after Worf against Sisko's orders in "Penumbra," which would have made an interesting turnabout in light of "Change of Heart."

(Though, In Terry's defense, she did go on to have a role on a major netwok show that lasted several years after DS9 was done so professionally it was a good move).

I like this episode not because of Vic but because of Nog here is a character who has to come to terms with his own mortality after being injured in combat. I felt that for a tv show it was a great attempt at showing the physcological effects of war.

I'm rewatching the show on Netflix, and I am finding the Dominion War a lot less interesting this time around. I thought it was great the first time I saw it, but now I think Season 4 was definitely the highlight of the show. Maybe I just have a soft spot for Klingons.

That must be it. I hate Klingons, so that's why I prefer season 7 and the rebelling Cardassians.

And, of course, Damar. :D

What got me upon re-watching was how little we saw them considering how long the war went on... It's almost as if they didn't take the threat we represent seriously!
