The Defenders--Marvel/Netflix

Maybe Luke could borrow a magic bulletproof shirt from John Wick?

The Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon had a team-up a week or two back that spent the episode with Drax confusedly trying to determine when the Avengers were going to use vengeance to the chagrin of Steve and Tony.

I preferred not to even put that kind of thought into it, because trying to make the name literally meaningful was a cheesy move, IMO.

I thought it was an excellent bit of Whedonian wordplay. It's in the vein of the "brick joke" -- where something that was set up a long time ago suddenly gets a payoff that you never saw coming but feels totally right. Whedon is really good at those. Also, it made emotional sense in context. Whedon wouldn't have used it just as some hollow excuse to "make the name literally meaningful" -- he did it because it was emotionally meaningful, because the words served to express Tony's sincere anger about Coulson's death peeking out from underneath the protective layers of Stark snark. That was the moment where he declared war on Loki, and let him know that the Avengers would be the instrument of his downfall.

I think the names are backwards. Defenders sounds like a team a top tier heroes while Avengers suits the street level types.
Invaders might be the worst match up though, given their foes were well known for invading.

Now we just need an air date so I can book it off work.
The big thing I have to plan in my schedule is what books to read in prep for it. Originally, I was going to read practically everything of Iron Fist (OK, about 75%) before I realized it would just be work instead of fun and settled for his solo story up to Heroes for Hire and the Immortal Iron Fist run.

Thankfully, I don't think I have to read anything in particular for this Defenders run. I should be all caught up and can start focusing on Punisher.

I generally enjoyed Danny's early stories, but felt that the villains, aside from those directly connected to Iron Fist's own mythology, were a parade of C-list wanna-bes. Batroc the Leaper, Angar the Screamer, Warhawk, Boomerang and the Wrecking Crew are the most recognizable names, with only the Wrecking Crew approaching B-List status.

Hey, don't knock Angar. He's the best psychedelic hippie villain ever! Actually, his appearance in Iron Fist doesn't even make much sense after I read the Daredevil issues which seemed to resolve his story.

Here's the thing. Most of the villains were an attempt to add to the Iron Fist mythology, just not all of them caught on. I thought Master Khan had potential, same with that cult whose name I forgot. Warhawk was a new character as well. Overall, they felt a bit like early Claremont. What he was doing in Iron Fist wasn't that different from what he did in Captain Britain. But I'm fine with recognizing it as the diamonds in the rough they were. Plus, I thought the very first story and some of the later Claremont stuff leading into the merger with Luke Cage were very good and it made sense to just read everything.

I remember a two-parter in one of the Superman titles ca. 1980 with a villain who was a leftover hippie who could make people obey his commands by saying the word "please".

One of the best Bronze Age Superman's stories.

^Oh, I've read about that story before. Didn't the whole thing with Jonathan turn out to be an illusion of some kind, with the secret-identity thing being reset at the end?

So is this definitely airing before Punisher?
Is Punisher still filming, or is it done too?

The Defenders has just completed filming and is on track for a mid-2017 release. The Punisher is currently filming and will probably come out late in 2017. They both started filming last October, but they're 8 episodes and 13 episodes respectively, so Punisher will take longer to wrap up.

I'm so excited about Defenders. I need some more Jessica Jones in my life, stat.
