The Daily Show Without Jon Stewart

I thought that about Wilmore and Oliver, but I'm not so fussed on them as hosts.

Let me float an idea.

Who has hosted a program like this? Who is witty, sharp, quick and informed? Who would drive Fox News absolutely maaaaaadd? And who was on the Daily Show on Monday (and was very, very good)?

You know who I'm talking about. Come on. It'd be great.

Dig it?

Larry and Oliver must be spitting their dummies.

Would they have left if they knew the big chair was going to be available 5 minutes later?

Jason and Samantha are going to destroy everyone else, and then take screwdrivers to each other.

Exactly what I was thinking, esp in the case of Oliver

Meh. Stephen Colbert was the real loss IMO.

They were both good in my opinion. And iirc Stewart helped to executive produce Stephen Colbert's show. Supporting one another was one good thing for the both of them tbh.

Both of them lampooned the political system and gave it a nice swift kick in the rear which it truly needed. :techman:

The comedy and (in a way) the news world is a lot sadder off without either of them :(.

Political satire didn't begin and won't end with Stewart. I liked Stewart for a long time and then felt he lost his edge in the last few years, while Colbert just kept hitting it out of the park. To stay in that character for so long takes some kind of talent and effort.

But yeah, both of them being gone is a bummer. Be very interesting to see who (if anyone) they get to take over that show.

Sometime last year I began to get the feeling that Stewart's heart wasn't in it like it used to be, in fact after Colbert announced he would be leaving my wife predicted Stewart would do the same within a year.

The show seemed to have a hard time recapturing the energy it had during the Bush years, which was like the gift that kept on giving. Covering right-wing overreactions, stagnation in Congress and politicians saying stupid things gets old. And some stories, like Ferguson last year, seemed to find them too angry to really be funny.

Also, as the show has become something of a career stepping stone, the bench of correspondents has gotten weaker, leaving Stewart to try and wrest some life out of the desk pieces for the however-many-hundredth time. I guess I think his decision is probably the right one. He had a good run, and he'll do something else worthwhile.

It's kind of mind-boggling to think that Leno, Letterman, Stewart, Colbert and Ferguson have ended / are ending their shows in roughly the same time. That's a pretty epochal change.

At some point this year after Stewart and Letterman are done, Jimmy Kimmel will be the longest-tenured late night host.

What about Conan? He just took a little vacation. ;)

Conan O'Brian's seniority gets knocked down for interrupted service, I guess?

ETA: Too late once again!

Goes to show how completely bland his run on TBS has been.

I've always liked this interview from back in the days of the first Underworld. Kate does some very funny interviews (almost Jennifer Lawrence like in some ways).

I wish, though, he could have given us one more election cycle. How are we going to get through 2016 without him?

When I heard, I was actually left without words. This is a heavy blow, and I will treasure the remaining months with Stewart on the job.

That said, just this instance, an idea crossed my mind. I've seen some articles and blogs online demanding a female replacement for Stewart, and considering that there's currently no female host on network late night TV, I tend to agree.

And when that thought crossed my mind, one name immediately popped up in my head:

Kristen Schaal.

She's been fantastic in her commentaries on the Daily Show, and is a brilliant stand-up comedian with her very own style. She's also one of the funniest and most intelligent comedians out there, in my opinion.

True, her commentaries on the Daily Show have always been heavy on gender news, but I think she's more than good enough to go for the general news, too.

Well, I'm not sure if this musing is good for anything, since CC is propably going to judge for themselves, and a few of the candidates we think up might not even want the job. But, of course, that won't stop the musing.

Since you put it that way, yeah, that sucks.

For my money her segments have been about the most consistently hilarious thing on TDS for a good while now. I believe she has a series commitment with Fox for "The Last Man on Earth." I think she's pretty well established as a comedic actor, I don't know if she'd want to be locked into a 150-episode-a-year commitment like TDS at this point in her career.

I'm still reeling from this news and I had a whole day to process it. First Stephen and now Jon. :(

My top choice for Jon's replacement is Samantha Bee.

As much as I love her segment's, I'm not sure if she could carry a whole show, same for her husband, whom I also find extremely funny. I'd like Comedy Central to make a woman or a non-white male the host of their flagship. ....double-win: Jessica Williams:)

Kirstin Schaal is waaaaaaay too busy doing voice over work. She's in every single frickin' cartoon these days.
