The College Football Thread

I was just guessing, Sparky. But then Newton's season still doesn't seem to merit "all-time greatest" status, especially due to the cloud that follows him.

What "cloud"? Sports writers invent a story about a young man and his family to tear down his season, and that's supposed to negatively affect his on-the-field accomplishments? The NCAA has cleared Cam and Auburn of any wrong-doing. There has never been the least shred of evidence that anything was wrong with Cam's recruitment. Sadly, if people read it in print or see it on ESPN, they automaticlly think it's true.

Two national championships, 50 TDs in a single season, playing the toughest schedule in the country - what else can he do? To put it in perspective, LaMichael James, Oregon's supposed Heisman contender, had 1682 yards rushing & 21 TDs. Cam had 1409 yards & 20 TDs rushing. Darron Thomas had 2518 passing yards, 60.7 %, 28 TDs, & 7 INTs. Cam had 2589 yards, 67.1 %, 28 TDs & 6 INTs. Cam Newton, by himself, has better stats than Oregon's two best players, one of whom was a Heisman finalist. I think that shows you how laughable this matchup is. Even Tim Tebow, who was worshipped by the college football world, didn't come close to matching Cam's stats.

You're doing little more than reinforcing the negative stereotype of SEC fans, so far.

I'll try not to let that upset me as I celebrate the Auburn's BCS National Championship win tonight. :)

On a serious note, I don't usually root for other SEC schools. In my mind, you just don't pull for your rivals (I enjoyed seeing Tennessee & Arkansas choke in their bowls). That being said, there's no doubt that the SEC is a differernt class of football than the rest of the country. 5 Championships in a row and 7 out of the 12 won by the conference. I don't think it's necessarily an SEC thing, though. It may be more a Southern thing, as every BCS Champion has been from a Southern state, except for Oklahoma in 2000, and Ohio St in 2002. Of course, that's not including 2004 (the BCS has said they will vacate the 2004 title after the appeal pocess has ended, "won" by USC - REAL and PROVEN cheaters).

I saw a news segment on the local TV station about Brian Jackson, an Oregon CB who is from Birmingham, AL. He is a huge Auburn fan, but wasn't recruited by either Alabama or Auburn. Although not good enough for the SEC, he was quickly grabbed by Oregon. He said on the interview that Auburn was still his favorite team, and he would definately wear an Auburn NC T shirt if the Ducks happened to lose. No disrespect to the kid, but that is a loser's mentality, and if is an indication of Oregon football as a whole, then they deserve the beatdown coming to them tonight.

I know almost nothing about college football, but I'll certainly be rooting for Oregon after reading to all that arrogant posing.

I'll thank you not to bring either of those up or I might be forced to take his side... :p
Sorry. No offense intended.

Roll Tide.

:klingon: :scream: :klingon::scream:

Yeah, roll Tide, right into a ditch.

:p

A. I don't consider somebody who was (caught being) paid to come to be an "all time great;" B. really? All Time Great? We'll see in 15 years what people think of that.

The Heisman seasons of Vince Young and Troy Smith, I think compare quite favorably with Newton's this year. Some variation, of course, but they're too close to elevate one over the other.

I hate to use Tim Tebow (:barf2:) for anything, but this link has an interesting comparison.

Also, I think there's more to "all-time greatest" than mere stats - character, longevity, affect on the game, memorability years later, yeah?

If you looked up the stats, I can't fathom why you included Smith. His passing numbers are similar, but he only had 204 yards rushing with 1 TD. That puts him out of the discussion.

A big part of that is almost certainly that the Bucks have and use a more traditional style of offense, even with athletic QBs like Smith and Terelle Pryor.

<snucker> Leave Cam Newton ALONE!!! :wah:

Complete agreement. That is a very interesting link, and yes, more than simply stats are needed when evaluating who measures up to such subjective terms as "all time great". It's hard to quantify an individual player's leadership, but I honestly feel that was one of his greatest strengths. Newton's shown me some impressive leadership, too. When Auburn was down this year, he went out and made the plays necessary... and that's what a great leader does.

Damn, this Air Force choir is better than any of the top 40 bands championship games usually get to sing the anthem.

(An aside, I'm totally shocked that Switchfoot is still around.)

Edit: Well, after all that talk about the offenses, it seems the defenses got a little pissed.

Is it a rule that Oregon must wear the most hideous ugly ass uniforms in creation? Okie State played them 2 years ago and I still remember hideous, ugly ass neon yellow and green.

The gray helmets with the soft gray lines and bright yellow "O"s on them are quite aesthetic. What, the puke yellow neon socks would clash with blue turf? Surely you jest, Shirley.

Maybe the legs/feet are supposed to act as a distraction. Can't hit the center of mass if you're drawn to the shiny.

I keep hoping ESPN chroma-keys something onto those socks. Similar to one of Colbert's green screen challenges.

I always forget NC games are usually underwhelming. A month of hype, everybody's rusty, and it becomes a bland game. (Plus, the insane amount of commercials.)

It's not like Auburn has blown up the scoreboard either. Both offenses haven't lived up to the hype, but the D's are coming up big.

Edit: Damn, looks like Auburn's defense has finally met a real offense.
