The College Football Thread

There was a report this morning that said LeGrand had sensation in one toe, so here's hoping that some sort of recovery may happen for him. Yesterday, today and tomorrow are basically the most important days for him, because if the doctors can't keep the spinal swelling down, he'll be boned. :(

Here's hoping indeed. That would be joyous.

You know, if you'd told me that OK State would score 41 points today, that its offensive line (consisting entirely of freshmen and red shirt freshmen) would consistently give Weeden plenty of time to throw, that Kendall Hunter would rush for over 200 yards and that Justin Blackmon would continue to be a beast at wide receiver--I'd have bet my home that that would equal a win today against Nebraska, whose quarterback was so bad last week that he was benched.

 Good thing I don't wager often.

I have never witnessed so many missed tackles on a quarterback in a single game in my LIFE. It passed into the realm of the absurd. It was laughable. We laughed through the tears. Three Oklahoma State players ran into each other on one play while Taylor Martinez slipped away from them all. Time and again he'd be in the back field on third down and long and he'd slip away from everyone and it was off to the races, or he'd make this ridiculous pass accompanied by a circus catch at the other end. And since when can Martinez throw like that? He passed for over 200 yards. :scream: We tackled their running back plenty, but Martinez carried the ball more than the running back. He may have ended up with as many yards rushing as Hunter. I recognize that Texas' front seven have more speed than O-State's, but Christ on a cracker... :wtf: :scream: :scream:

It's not as if Nebraska's defense was any great shakes,(first team in the whole game, gave up 41 points to O-State) but they go to our quarterback occasionally. :wtf: Martinez may have had the most prolific day of any D-1 quarterback this year. I'm completely serious. Look up his stats.

It's as if he were dipped in oil. It was ludicrous. Words cannot do justice to the defensive debacle I witnessed in person this afternoon. As I said, Nebraska's defense wasn't good, but it was successful occasionally. OK State dusted itself off and kept scoring, but Nebraska got a few stops here and there. ESPN called the game "defense optional." 51-41.

And Texas, benchers of Martinez, lost to the thoroughly pathetic Iowa State 28-21 in Austin.

Man, the Big 12 is weird this year. As Dorian expounded upon above. Texas is destroyed by UCLA in Austin, then goes and shuts down the Huskers' offense in Lincoln, then comes home and lays an egg against the Clones? Meanwhile, Nebraska can't do anything against Texas in Lincoln, and then explodes in Stillwater? Plus, Baylor's currently leading the South. :wtf: I was very glad to see Mizzou get it done - for their sake, and because I'd still like to see Boise in the National Championship.

Meanwhile, my Vols keep looking... young. Painfully, painfully young. And getting embarrassed in Knoxville. I've got faith in Dooley, but man... :(

In the meantime, can I adopt the Wisconsin Badgers as my secondary team? I like their style. :techman:

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending October 23rd, 2010

1 – Boise State (6-0)

The Broncos still play Fresno State, Hawaii and at Nevada (which has blown out every opponent it's faced at home, including California, this year), so running the table is not quite a gimme.

2 – Oregon (7-0)

The Ducks look literally unstoppable.

3 – Auburn (8-0)

Not sure even 'Bama can contain Cam Newton.

4 – Michigan State (8-0)

Got up off the mat nicely after trailing 17-7 at Northwestern.

5 – Missouri (7-0)

Who'd have thought they'd be the class of the Big 12 at this point?

6 – Texas Christian (8-0)

That good-quality win over Air Force would have been a great one if the Falcons hadn't stumbled the week before against San Diego State.

7 – Utah (7-0)

Barring disaster, it looks as if the Utah-TCU winner and Boise State will both crash the BCS party ... and, frankly, the Big East champion should graciously step aside for the loser here. Yeah, like that's gonna happen.

8 – Wisconsin (7-1)

Now I'm a believer, or at least more of one—though Iowa wins if their quarterback plays decently and their coach doesn't pull a Les Miles re: time management at game's end.

9 – Alabama (7-1)

I'm no longer sure they climb back into the BCS title game if they run the table and two among Boise State, Oregon, Missouri, Michigan State and the TCU-Utah winner are undefeated.

10 – Stanford (6-1)

They're a worthy Pac-10 champ if Oregon really stumbles.

11 – Louisiana State (7-1)

If Jefferson doesn't throw that early interception, this is a very different game.

12 – Ohio State (7-1)

Amazing, and ridiculous, that some polls have them above Wisconsin.

13 – Oklahoma (6-1)

ESPN's Skip Bayless (an OU alum, I believe) called for this upset—though I think he was trying some sort of counterspell, to be frank.

14 – Nebraska (6-1)

The Texas loss is going to drag them down ... and it should.

15 – Arizona (6-1)

They could still rally and win the Pac-10.

16 – Florida State (6-1)

I think Virginia Tech gives them a beatdown in the ACC title game, if both hold serve until then.

17 – Oklahoma State (6-1)

Well, that happened right on schedule, as I predicted. [Sorry, Dorian. They did fight hard, at least.]

18 – Virginia Tech (6-2)

They may yet climb back into the top five by season's end.

19 – Iowa (5-2)

Well, I'll now shut up about the Hawkeyes—especially after witnessing their time management, which rivals LSU's. Wow. Literally cost them that game, in all likelihood.

20 – South Carolina (5-2)

And both their losses were games they should've won. Yikes.

21 – Arkansas (5-2)

Beginning to wonder if Mallett is frail.

22 – Miami, Florida (5-2)

You just know Harris would no longer be starting if Shannon had anyone else.

23 – Mississippi State (6-2)

I hope they do some more damage in the SEC.

24 – Nevada (6-1)

Any loss or narrow win at Hawaii comes with an asterisk.

25 – Navy (5-2)

Each of the service academies is a tough out this year ... and since any of ten or twenty teams might legitimately claim this last spot, I'll be patriotic.

Knight Watch: Don't get me started.

I've already decided I'm going to every playoff game we're still in whether I have to hitchhike, murder, pillage... whatever. I'm tired of seeing the same old crappy teams year after year. I think a JSU/Delaware matchup would be fun.

I would love it. Certainly anybody is better than Appalachian State.

I think Delaware is banned from hosing post-season games, though, so I'm not sure if I'd be able to make any playoff games if we make it.

JSU had 56 unanswered points set a new Division I record for the school...the previous record was 48 set in 1999 versus Union College. I think JSU moved to D1 in 1997.

Glad to witness a historic JSU beatdown.

The 3rd string QB came in and threw a 30 yard pass followed by two more short passes to score a touchdown to a 3rd string receiver. Makes me wonder why these guys don't get more playing time. They were on point.

What a weekend! I'm still hyped-up from being at the Mizzou game, and on the field afterwards. If you EVER have the opportunity to rush the field, do it! It's something you will probably remember for a long time! Afterwards, my wife -- who rushed the field with me -- asked "Is it okay if I think this was more memorable than our wedding?"

At least she didn't say "wedding night."
