The College Football Thread

JM'S Top Twenty-Five, week ending October 2nd, 2010

1 – Alabama (5-0)

Their lead seems to be increasing every week.

2 – Oregon (5-0)

I'd pay to see these guys against the Tide.

3 – Boise State (4-0)

They're doing what they have to do.

4 – Ohio State (5-0)

Struggled against an inferior opponent, but got the job done.

5 – Texas Christian (5-0)

Earned no style points this week.

6 – Auburn (5-0)

The Iron Bowl might be quite a game.

7 – Oklahoma (5-0)

It'd mean more if Texas were any good.

8 – Nebraska (5-0)

I bet they're furious that Texas ain't so hot this year. They were layin' for the 'Horns.

9 – Nevada (5-0)

Arizona edged Cal. The Wolf Pack humiliated them.

10 – Arizona (5-0)

As Stanford falls out, another from the Pac-10 enters the top ten.

11 – Utah (5-0)

These guys have BCS dreams, too.

12 – Stanford (4-1)

Looks like the Ducks are that good.

13 – Louisiana State (5-0)

They won't go undefeated without an offense. Just ask Penn State and Rutgers.

14 – Michigan (5-0)

Have to wonder if Michigan-Oregon might not end 62-61.

15 – Florida (4-1)

Gators, meet woodshed.

16 – Michigan State (5-0)

When's the last time Sparty faced off against U of M when both were undefeated this late in the year? I think the winner vaults into my top ten.

17 – Miami, Florida (3-1)

I'd really consider benching Harris ... but does Shannon have a great option behind him?

18 – Iowa (4-1)

Penn State is, quite frankly, their bitch.

19 – Arkansas (3-1)

If 'Bama runs the table, the Hogs may still prove to have been their closest test.

20 – Oklahoma State (4-0)

The 'Pokes showed some heart Thursday night.

21 – South Carolina (3-1)

The over/under for Gamecocks losses this year? Three-point-five.

22 – Missouri (4-0)

Can they play with anyone in their conference that matters?

23 – Kansas State (4-0)

Same question, different team.

24 – Northwestern (5-0)

This is getting redundant, now.

25 – Air Force (4-1)

That win over Navy meant everything to them.

Rutgers Watch: I can't even talk about it. :brickwall:

So by the transitive property of wishful thinking FCS football, Delaware is now better than Virginia Tech.

Heh. Wonder if the Hens would like to play them now that the Hokies have actually awakened?

I don't want to play Virginia Tech at all. Teams that lose to FCS teams generally played sloppy that day. Even in best case scenarios, I would never say the FCS team has a greater than 50% chance of winning. Also, unlike FBS, winning against a better team doesn't dramatically change much. Chances of making the playoffs are going to be overwhelmingly determined by in-Conference games. A victory against an FBS team is nice, but most teams play against the FBS teams because they couldn't make as much money otherwise, not for any reputation it might bring.

Well, to be fair Rutgers is having all sorts of negative attention this week that has nothing to do with football. Hope those two assholes got thrown out of school. Can't believe they thought broadcasting that was a "harmless prank."

Being thrown out of school is the LEAST of what should happen to them. They need to do time. If you ask me, it's time to start making an example out of people who think that there are no consequences for what they say and do on the Internet.

Unfortunately they can't be charged legally with manslaughter, but I'm sure they'll be convicted of something. They're both legal adults, and he was operating the webcam by remote control from her room. That's premeditation in my mind. Having to explain that little felony conviction on their records and why they did a year or so in jail won't endear them to future employers. Honestly, how anyone can describe this as a "prank gone awry" (and it has been described that way) just flabbergasts me. They are legal adults, old enough to know better.

To sum up my feelings on LSU's "Miracle Finish"....

:eek::biggrin::techman::beer: ..... :confused::wtf::mad::scream::brickwall:

Today? :shrug::sigh:

And as for my thoughts on the upcoming Georgia game....:devil:

FCS Rankings:

1. Appalachian State Mountaineers (101) 4-0
2. Delaware Blue Hens (29) 5-0
3. Jacksonville State Gamecocks (12) 5-0
4. William & Mary Tribe 4-1
5. Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (1) 3-1

I can't argue with that. The top three undefeated teams are in the top three. JMU couldn't ride VT forever, but they're still a respectable sixth. The real loser is Nova, who seemed to be riding second for awhile with little reason.

EDIT: We need Appalachian State to drop so the top two teams can be related to fighting poultry ;)

South Carolina is looking seriously good against Alabama. Of course, Bama has helped that cause by missing a FG and extra point, but the Gamecocks are in the lead because they are seriously playing good ball.

Sparty is puttin the hurt on Denard Robinson and the Wolverines, but the Michigan defense - shock of shocks - is what's keeping them in the game.

The Lions fan in me can't enjoy this MSU pounding until it's all said and done. I know all too well about self-destruction.

I do like that little blondie in the white jersey that they keep showing though.

Eighth grade. The Old Ball Coach put together a great plan and his Gamecocks executed it very well. I was afraid Alabama's young defense would let them down at some point this year and it happened today. Congratulations to South Carolina and here's hoping Bama sees them again this December in Atlanta.

Well, the Era of Lowered Expectation continues for USC.

It's too bad our defense is so God-awful. Our offense is playing pretty well.

Stanford should feel pretty fortunate after this one.

:scream:

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending October 9th, 2010

1 – Boise State (5-0)

They've looked great, have no discernable weaknesses, and are packin' wins over two high-quality opponents in Virginia Tech and Oregon State. Hard to argue it.

2 – Oregon (6-0)

The Ducks have the best "not so fast" with the huge win over Stanford, but even so ...

3 – Oklahoma (5-0)

The victories over Florida State and Air Force currently look great. Arguably, the schedule's been more impressive than Boise's—except that both were in Norman.

4 – Ohio State (6-0)

Now that Miami's going into the tank a bit, the Buckeyes have no truly impressive win. Fortunately, their schedule gets beefier in the second half of their season.

5 – Texas Christian (6-0)

Games with Utah and Air Force will really give them a chance to impress me.

6 – Nebraska (5-0)

Nebraska-Oklahoma's gonna be bigger than it's been in years, it seems.

7 – Louisiana State (6-0)

Miles has got a pair about that big.

8 – Michigan State (6-0)

I'll really stunned that Sparty's still unbeaten.

9 – Utah (5-0)

This Utah-TCU game could be for some very shiny marbles.

10 – Auburn (6-0)

Let UK back in that game.

11 – South Carolina (4-1)

Gotta call 'em the best one-loss team in the country, right?

12 – Alabama (5-1)

Garcia picked 'em apart.

13 – Stanford (5-1)

A win over USC is always a soothing salve.

14 – Iowa (4-1)

Still think they're going to win the Big Ten.

15 – Arkansas (4-1)

They've got another loss or two coming in SEC play, but they're dangerous.

16 – Nevada (6-0)

I've rarely seen a team blow so many scoring opportunities and yet still lay 35 on their opposition. They're like Oregon South.

17 – Florida State (5-1)

I bet Bobby enjoyed that.

18 – Missouri (5-0)

We lost another of our Big 12 pretenders when Nebraska cornholed Kansas State. Here's another that's almost certainly not ready for prime time, either.

19 – Oklahoma State (5-0)

Need I say it twice in a row?

20 – Air Force (5-1)

Hanging with Oklahoma is still the best part of the resume, but ... that's pretty damned good.

21 – North Carolina State (5-1)

Big one upcoming with FSU.

22 – Arizona (4-1)

No disgrace: The Beavers are tough.

23 – Wisconsin (5-1)

Here's a chance to prove me wrong, Badgers: Win a game that means something Saturday. It ain't gonna happen, though: These guys are overrated every year.

24 – Michigan (5-1)

The theory's borne out: If Robinson ain't awesome, they don't win.

25 (tie) – Florida (4-2)

25 (tie) – Virginia Tech (4-2)

25 (tie) – Oregon State (3-2)

Say it with me: "Best two-loss teams in the country."

Rutgers Watch: The Knights may have a new quarterback in true freshman Chas Dodd, who'd be getting a lot of QB of the Week honors nationally if not for Steven Garcia. The kid came in and handled a pretty good UConn defense like a senior. Rutgers is now over .500 again, but considering that 4-2 Army just crushed the Tulane team that edged them in Piscataway last week, this upcoming game with the Cadets ain't no gimme. Top 25 consideration ain't in the cards unless RU's at least 6-2 ... and it'd probably take 7-2 to really convince me.
