The College Football Thread

Wow...that Auburn win over Clemson was about the most painful, sloppy thing I could've imagined. It was a win, but they had better straighten up and fly right before they get to some of the really tough teams on their schedule!

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending September 18th, 2010

1 – Alabama (3-0)

Can one really argue this just now?

2 – Texas Christian (3-0)

Clearly the best little team in Texas.

3 – Ohio State (3-0)

They'd love to see Miami run the table now.

4 – Oregon (3-0)

Pinball wizards, thus far. Let's see if they can put up numbers against actual opposition.

5 – South Carolina (3-0)

I think the Gamecocks are incredibly dangerous this year, what with an actual running game.

6 – Oklahoma (3-0)

I'm so proud of my boys from Air Force. They never gave up.

7 – Stanford (3-0)

I think USC's Pac-10 schedule will be quite interesting, don't you?

8 – Nebraska (3-0)

I can't wait to see them bitch slap Texas.

9 – Boise State (2-0)

They're thanking the footballs gods that Virginia Tech woke up this week.

10 – Texas (3-0)

Toughed it out in Lubbock, I'll grant 'em that. But thus far, the Longhorns have not otherwise impressed me.

11 – Florida (3-0)

For all the hype, they're not really a top ten team just now.

12 – Wisconsin (3-0)

One of the luckier wins I've seen in a while.

13 – Auburn (3-0)

Clemson let 'em off the hook ... but a win's a win.

14 – Arizona (3-0)

I have to admit being stunned at their victory against Iowa.

15 – Michigan (3-0)

UMass is not a joke. That's a quality win.

16 – Arkansas (3-0)

I wonder how long after they're a power again will Petrino stay on?

17 – Utah (3-0)

The win over Pitt will look great if the Panthers beat Miami.

18 – LSU (3-0)

Not convinced, yet. They beat a decimated UNC, and a dilapidated MSU.

19 – North Carolina State (3-0)

The Tar Heels must be gnashing their teeth: This was supposed to be their season, and instead the Wolfpack looks great.

20 – Nevada (3-0)

The Wolf Pack Looks Great, Part Two. Boise State might well be in for a big surprise against either Nevada or Fresno State.

21 – Michigan State (3-0)

That call takes nerve ... but Sparty will stumble. They always do.

22 – Miami, Florida (1-1)

Did Harris just suck, or did the Buckeyes' defense rattle him? I'm not sure.

23 – Iowa (2-1)

I think they beat Arizona three out of four. Too bad this was number four.

24 – Penn State (2-1)

They actually have a game this weekend.

25 – Temple (3-0)

Yeah, that's right, Temple. They might very well give Penn State a Hell of a game Saturday. I ain't expecting it, mind you ... but it wouldn't stun me.

Rutgers watch: The Scarlet Knights are a nearly meaningless 2-0, and face a North Carolina team that will finally be back to full strength, and furious at the disintegration of a season that held so much promise. Could get ugly, if RU doesn't find an offense before Saturday. If they win, though, against a fighting-mad UNC, well ... then they'll make an appearance in next week's Top 25, with a real chance to be 6-0 before a game at Pittsburgh October 23rd.

Temple played better last year than in the past, but they're still a low-level I-A team.

Not so low a level as they were, which was precisely my point.

Obviously, any team can lose if they don't take their opponent seriously, that should just go without saying.

But it doesn't, in many cases.

I know, but my point is Temple's skill isn't the key factor here, it's the other team actually playing to win. Take the VT-JMU game. Nobody is saying the Dukes are on the rise so watch out, they're saying VT didn't take a I-AA team seriously. Temple is basically the same situation. Any team can win, regardless of the ability of the football program.

I know, but my point is Temple's skill isn't the key factor here, it's the other team actually playing to win.

Actually, the Owls' vast improvement and PSU's possible disregard are both signifcant factors.

Temple, at this point, could actually give the Lions a fairly decent game even if Penn State plays well.

Hell of a game between Wisconsin and Arizona State this afternoon. I've been a longtime critic of Wisconsin's high poll rankings, given the fact that the school frequently makes a ridiculously soft schedule for itself, and today's game exhibited some pretty big holes in the Badgers. (Special teams, notably, were absolutely horrific, outside of the blocked PAT.)

But in a little while, I get to watch Iowa beat up on Arizona. :)

What the hell happened to our Hawkeyes? I guess I should have tried to watch the game last night. :(

:wtf:

Wow. You know, if ever there were an entry for "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" in a vernacular dictionary, the Arkansas Razorbacks September 25, 2010 game with the Crimson Tide of Alabama could be referenced with no further explanation necessary.

Oh. My. God. :cardie: Words fail me.

Stanford got a big win today against the Irish. However, next week is a huge game in Eugene. I'm very much looking forward to that one.

Ingram and Richardson are possibly the most dangerous RB combo in the country right now. What's more, I don't now that any team in the country could fall behind 20-7 and come back to win, not with the way Arkansas was playing. Bama is a frighteningly complete team.

Oklahoma better thank the Gods that Cincinnati's kickoff return guy can't hold on to the football. Talk about a gift. If he'd held on, OU would have lost. Those guys had momentum and confidence and their defense kept bailing them out, but Cinci just couldn't stand prosperitiy.

WAR EAGLE! Now I think THAT got closer to the Auburn football I know and love! I have to hand it to South Carolina...they were playing very well, and almost had it. But I think that for the first time this year, Auburn really played 2 good halves of football. :D

In the "if anyone cares" department, my Alma mater, University of Delaware beat conference rival number 5 ranked Richmond 34-13 making them 3-0 with all impressive wins. I think they're trying to make a run this year and beat Joe Flacco's best year with the team.

1 – Alabama (4-0)

That was perhaps more of a test than they were expecting.

2 – Ohio State (4-0)

Looking formidable on both sides of the ball.

3 – Boise State (3-0)

That's two high-quality wins now, and Nevada may well prove to be a third.

4 – Texas Christian (4-0)

Didn't look great against SMU, but June Jones does have the Mustangs playing hard.

5 – Oregon (4-0)

I can't wait to see how much their offense produces against Stanford.

6 – Stanford (4-0)

One of the above two is about to be exposed.

7 – Florida (4-0)

Now they look more like a top ten team.

8 – Auburn (4-0)

It's only a matter of time before they revert, but ... for now ...

9 – Oklahoma (4-0)

Either Cincinnati and Air Force are better than everyone thought, or Oklahoma isn't quite as good.

10 – Nebraska (4-0)

South Dakota State is another of those dangerous FCS teams.

11 – Wisconsin (4-0)

Hmm ... we've got a very interesting race shaping up in the Big Ten.

12 – Louisiana State (4-0)

And the Tigers put an exclamation point on the Big East's mediocrity.

13 – Arizona (4-0)

Stoops Southwest seems finally poised to make a real run.

14 – Michigan (4-0)

If the kid can't go, where do they go? Down, most likely.

15 – North Carolina State (4-0)

Unfortunately, the schedule gets downright brutal.

16 – Nevada (4-0)

I would so love to see an undefeated Wolf Pack take on Boise State.

17 – Arkansas (3-1)

Mallet cost them that game, no question. If he's competent, Alabama's 3-1.

18 – Utah (4-0)

They're quietly rolling along. I'm not sure the Pac-10 members will be as thrilled with their inclusion in the conference once they're playing the Utes every year.

19 – South Carolina (3-1)

I should have known better than to put my faith in them too soon.

20 – Miami, Florida (2-1)

Harris is just interception prone. I wonder if the 'Canes are talented enough to consistently overcome that.

21 – Iowa (3-1)

That Arizona loss may look better and better as the weeks pass.

22 – Michigan State (4-0)

This is usually around the time their freefall begins, ain't it?

23 – Penn State (4-0)

Told you Temple would give them a game ... but that also means it absolutely counts as a quality win.

24 – Missouri (4-0)

One of these last three has to be legit, right?

25 (tie) – Kansas State (4-0)

I think you have to put your money on the 'Cats, just because Snyder's their coach.

25 (tie) – Oklahoma State (4-0)

Whereas these guys fold like a cheap hooker punched in the gut when challenged. Still, undefeated is undefeated, and so ...

Rutgers Watch: That may have been the single most inept offensive performance I've ever seen: The Knights lost to an undermanned UNC, 17-13, after holding a ten-point lead and squandering more scoring opportunities than they in any way deserved. The defense was awesome, and is clearly one of the best units in the country. If they could move the ball even occasionally, this would be a Top 15 team. As it is ... ugh. Pathetic. I have a feeling that Schiano's going to finally start feeling some heat if RU doesn't win at least ten games this year. With their schedule of palookas, though, such really isn't impossible.

Well, I follow FCS since I graduated from an FCS school. Good win for them. I hope to see them in playoffs. That would be fun. :D

The rankings will probably be

1. Villanova Wildcats
2. Appalachian State Mountaineers
3. James Madison Dukes
4. Jacksonville State Gamecocks
5. Delaware Blue Hens

However, I think the FCS voters are all idiots because teams will go 1-3 and still be ranked in the top 15.
