Actors are not chosen to be like their predecessors, they are chosen to play the part of the fictional character, and put their own spin on it, as per the script. You might as well argue only Laurence Oliver, who died decades ago should play Hamlet.

You mean the writers plagiarized themselves.

 Lots of people have lots of opinions, what dictates one holding less liquid than others?

Agreed. DSC isn't the first show to have actors that appear to be miscast or called 'bad actors' being superlative in other shows. The whole set of underlying possibilities is large enough to sell an inaccurate perception. A lot of it does start at script level. Ideally the scripts are strong and the actors adding more to than what's just on paper. And it's harder to get an actor to make generic scripting more than the sum of its syllables.

Depends on if they're actually giving their opinion or if they're just trash-talking. When talking trash, everything's fair game as a target, so it might not be what someone really thinks. More like they're just trying to score points.

Can you be more specific? For example, do you dislike the way he delivers his lines?

Usually, and in this case, the fact that it goes against a very large or even the overwhelming majority consensus of others.
(doesn't make it wrong, but appears most peculiar when stated as if it is a Fact instead of an Opinion)

As for what dictates Liquidity, it is well known that under most circumstances involving gravity, all aqueous matter flows in a downhill direction.
Unless one is a salmon, going upstream tends to involve ones EGO rather than ones Intelligence.

Because his version of Spock doesn't remind me of Spock in any real way. To me, this actor just acts like any other random Vulcan. His cadence, and his mannerisms are just all wrong.

I have to say that I find the cast of STD(I still, still get a laugh calling it that:biggrin:) to be uniformly excellent.
I hate to name some and not others but Doug Jones,in a very challenging costume/makeup is incredible.
Also Sonequa Martin Green who makes a character that on paper could be very unrelatable just the opposite.
This is coming from a guy who was ambivalent about the show before I got to see it.I really thought that I was over Trek but Discovery has I’m delighted to say proved me wrong.

In the scene between Spock and Burnham in The Red Angel where they had a heart-to-heart and Spock accepted Burnham's apology, I thought Peck was extremely Spock-like.

No, he didn't use Nimoy's mannerisms or cadence, but the character felt to me like Spock. I think he nailed the character completely in that scene. Nor should he use Nimoy's mannerisms and cadence. Peck is playing Spock; he isn't imitating Nimoy's portrayal of Spock.

if you think that he is the wrong actor to play spock, then not only are you insulting him and everything he has worked for, but you are also insulting each and every fan here of disco and we DO NOT appreciate it. we love this show and nothing you can say or do can take that away from us.

There is no reason to make this personal. Poster is entitled to their opinion, just as you are, and they are taking nothing away from you by expressing their opinion.

To each their own. I think he's doing a better job of playing Spock than Zachary Quinto.

I think Peck and Quinto are basically the same take on Spock, namely an apocryphal emotional Spock. Culturally I think we're living in an era where nobody appreciates the value of stoicism. People these days worship emotion of all kinds and are literally addicted to online drama as a substitute for healthier interpersonal relations. Quinto's speech in the Falcon ripoff in Into Darkness where he framed logic as unhealthy emotional repression is a case in point. Spock's logic is, for the most part, meant to represent a strength, not a defect. While logic is not enough, it is STILL a virtue, especially as a check against the emotional swings of others around him. The construction of "logic extremists" and Spock talking about how liberated he feels not adhering to stoicism is Discovery merely continuing to roll the ball JJ started.

Someone hasn't seen "The Cage", "Where No Man..." and much of early-TOS. Why would an emotional Spock be apocryphal? He is half-human, grew up with a human mother. It would make zero sense for him to be emotionless his entire life. The fact he pursued Kolinahr shows he didn't even feel he had his emotions in check.

We all take time to find our way, and often it isn't a linear progression.

I think both Quinto and Peck have been awesome additions to the franchise.
