The bridge shots (large images)

Re: The bridge shots

White walls themselves are not a problem. Most walls here on Earth are white, including the ones in my house. I think the more muted red floor will help offset some of the glariness. The control stations, including the hostess station have black workspace/displays too.

Hopefully they dial down the little spotlights shining in the faces of everyone.

I don't really get the need for glass walls. I know why we have them on ships today, but they're so in-the-way, I don't see the advantage of having them on a SF ship.

Re: The bridge shots

I think all the "pure white" talk is a bit overblown. Yeah there appear to be some bright lights shining down on the center of the bridge, but the surrounding areas look a lot more muted, and frankly not all that much brighter than the TOS bridge.

Hell, Sulu almost looks like he's in shadow.

Besides, the bridge is the freakin epicenter of the ship. It SHOULD look bright and active.

Active, not necessarily bright. As somebody else has doubtless said, CIC in modern ships would be more the equivalent. I'd rather have focused light where I needed it instead of bounce glare.

But one thing I've noticed is that on the Sulu still, looking past him, it looks dark and contrasty like the TOS bridge. So it could be they've retained some of that dark black console stuff on the sides, and gone white only on the front and back. That would allow them to 'surprise' the viewer by establishing one aspect and then revealing the other.

Re: The bridge shots

Captain's chair shot: What happened to Kirk's hand? More to the point... white bandages? What happened to spray-on skin and other 23rd century medical care? Maybe that's why McCoy is brooding in that shot. He's feeling guilty over letting a patient leave sickbay with a fabric bandage wrapped around his hand.

Well they were still using bandage type medical supplies in the 23rd century.....remember those sparkly ones on TOS.

Of course its a pity they could not throw a few over old Chris Pike,

......but he did get the chair with the yellow light.

Hmmm, considering that the Enterprise bridge was different in all six of the TOS movies, I'm personally not surprised it's different here. Maybe that's the part of "canon" they are respecting, e.g. every time it's appeared in a movie, it's been different.

I like the bridge design. I wasn't expecting something this radical of a change from the original design but I can live with it. The lighting on the bridge doesn't look blindingly bright to me as others have complained about. Looks like a comfortable environment to work in.

On top of that, for all we know the lightning could be unmodified, whereas in the film it will be somewhat toned down. We don't know from a single still.

Yeah this is more likely a publicity photo someone took on set than a frame from the movie itself.

To me it does look like someone simply took a couple of snapshots.

And the change in lighting and motion is gonna magically make this set look more like the original set....how?
Its isn't. It doesn't need to. Its a different bridge. It does pay certain design homages to the Pike-era bridge, but that's all.

Which is fine. Its not quite what I would've done, but I don't hate it. The Yeoman's station is quite a clever addition.

William Shatner: You know, before I answer any more questions there's something I wanted to say. Having received all your letters over the years, and I've spoken to many of you, and some of you have traveled... y'know... hundreds of miles to be here, I'd just like to say... GET A LIFE, will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it's just a TV show! I mean, look at you, look at the way you're dressed! You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME!

[ a crowd of shocked and dismayed Trekkies.... ]

I mean, how old are you people? What have you done with yourselves?

[ to "Ears" ] You, you must be almost 30... have you ever kissed a girl?

[ "Ears" hangs his head ]

I didn't think so! There's a whole world out there! When I was your age, I didn't watch television! I LIVED! So... move out of your parent's basements! And get your own apartments and GROW THE HELL UP! I mean, it's just a TV show dammit, IT'S JUST A TV SHOW!

Charlie: Are- are you saying then that we should pay more attention to the movies?

William Shatner: NO!!! THAT'S NOT WHAT I'M SAYING AT ALL!!! HEY, YOU GUYS ARE... THE LAMEST BUNCH... I'VE NEVER SEEN... [ walks away from podium ] I can't believe these people... I mean, I really can't understand what's....

Re: The bridge shots

I'm on the fence. The bridge shot reminds me of Galaxy Quest crossed with the New Lost in Space.

My thoughts exactly. Looks like a still from a very expensive and unnecessarily skillful parody, just close enough to Star Trek that people would know what they're lampooning but not close enough to get sued. Almost.

I just hope they have given the rank insignia a bit better thought than most Star Treks have, the only one that covered ranks & ratings properly were the movies from Khan. In TOS you couldn't tell ensigns and ratings apart. On the issue of McCoy wearing two stripes (one thin), in real life don't Surgeons in the US Navy usually graduate at Lieutenant (jg) instead of Ensign as they had to train longer?

Re: The bridge shots

Wow just noticed witht he uniforms that those are acully thousands on deltas in the uniform to give it it's texture.
Too much like Supermans suit in "Superman Returns".
It's nonsensical, non-functional, and at BEST won't be noticed at all.

If the audience is paying close enough attention to the fabric to notice that... doesn't that inherently mean that the PLOT has failed to do so???

This is something to throw money away on (this wasn't off-the-rack fabric, they had to have it made, which means that they spent money from the budget that could have better been spent on other things!). The best possible option is that the audience won't notice it, because the film will be good enough that they won't be BORED ENOUGH to pay attention to that.

It's one of those "nods" to the fans. You know, the upraised-middle-finger-in-disguise gesture Berman & Braga liked to throw Star Trek fans every couple weeks for about three years earlier this decade.
