I think its about how you look at it, for stopping massive threats, you cannot go wrong with Kirk and Co, for Diplomacy, Exploration and the Prevention of Hostile Situations, Picard and Co hold that distinction

Then you have the likes of Archer and Sisko whose skills as Commanders found their distinction during times of War or Battle (Xindi Crisis and Dominion War)

Then there Janeway, I've said this controversially before, but if you look at it from the facts, Janeway managed to survive in completely uncharted territory. with no back up or communication from the Federation. in a small ship, with a crew of less than 200, with minimal casualties and get home within 7-8 years of what should have been a 75 year journey. Also the fact remains that Janeway singlehandedly took on the Borg on numerous occasions and won, in fact in her last meeting with them in the Delta Quadrant, she dealt them a crippling blow and outwitted the Queen's final attempt to stop them. The Voyager crew also came up with a way to stop Species 8472, something the Borg couldn't even accomplish!

Anyway if you wanna Mix and Match a succesfull crew, heres my opinion

Captain: Picard (Most well rounded Captain, experienced in Diplomacy, Exploration, Scientific Investigation and if necessary, Defense)
1st Officer: Kirk (I know controversial, but I reckon Kirk in his younger days would have been a hell of a first officer, his command experience, impulsiveness, intelligence and ability in physical confrontations would have made him an valuable asset)
Science Officer: Spock (Who else?)
Tactical: Worf (Worf has had the most most experience in Combat Situations out of all the Tactical Officers in the Federation, having been in the frontline of two conflicts with the Borg (BOBW and FC) and of course the Dominion War)
Helm: Tom Paris (Most experienced Pilot, has actually done more as a Helm Officer than just setting a course and engaging Warp Drive
Ops: Data (Who else?)
CMO: Bashir (With "The Doctor" and Dr Crusher as a part of the team)
Chief Engineer: Scotty (The most adaptable Engineer in Trek, has accomplished the impossible on several occasions, wrote the book on Engineering and even though he is almost a Century behind in "Relics", he'd probably catch up and even be ahead in several respects within a few years)
Counsellor: Ezri (I think she is more effective, having experienced the horrors first hand of things such as War, as a counsellor than Troi)

Or if its pure Diplomacy you are after...

Captain: Picard
1st Officer: Chakotay
Helm: Nog
Engineering: Geordi
Ops: Data
Tactical/Security: Tuvok
Counsellor: Troi

Best how?

Most iconic? TOS.

Best at their jobs? TNG.

The ones I like best? DS9.

Best actors? VOY, overall.

Best written? DS9 again.

If your focus is teamwork, I'd nominate DS9 as the best in terms of working as a team, but only if you include the non-Starfleet folks like Kira, Rom and Garak. And even then, there was a great deal of friction to their teamwork since they had different personalities and agendas.

Odo and Kira were potential threats to the group goals at certain points in the story. You could argue that Sisko undermined Starfleet goals by siding with the Bajorans more than Starfleet. Bashir and O'Brien fighting over Bashir's ketrecel-white cure is a great example of two characters who should be (and usually were) solid team members, but who have radically different points of view what's best for the group. Was Garak's role in "In the Pale Moonlight" an example of good teamwork (doing the dirty work Starfleet needed to, but didn't have the stomach for) or subversion? Ditto for Section 31's Founder virus. Was that genocide, or did they win the war and save the Federation (or both?)

OTOH, Worf was a solid team member in siding with Starfleet vs. the Klingons and even killing Gowron when he became a problem. And the whole gang was loyal enough to Sisko to spend weeks in the holosuite playing baseball - a game I'm sure they didn't comprehend and probably didn't really like much - just because Sisko had a juvenile, ego-fueled feud with a Vulcan who was being a dick, even though you'd think being on the front lines of a war would take up enough of their time. The plotline with Odo, Kira, Garak and Damar at the end of S7 was a terrific example of people with highly divergent personalities and agendas learning to work together and not try to slit each others' throats. :D

DS9 will definitely give you the most interesting material for a discussion on what, exactly, teamwork is.

TNG certainly showed the best teamwork, with each person being able to demonstrate his best skills more than any other show.
