The Avengers & the Hulk

I said in my post they could have chosen to leave Hulk out of the film, but they chose to include him because of the set up work they did in "The Incredible Hulk".

There is a past and future tense thing going on here, not that I have any right to critise anyone on spelling and grammar.

There was never a chance the Hulk wouldn't be in the Avengers movie - RDJ's cameo at the end showed everyone who went to see the movie that. Marvel has been goin' for larger universe since Iron Man. There's gonna be a payoff, its gonna be awesome, and the Hulk is gonna be there for it.

Along with Nick Fury, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye & Coulson.

Kinda wish War Machine were part of that line-up, too...why isn't War Machine in the Avengers?!?

This interview with Collider would indicate that Marvel Studios did not exercise Don Cheadle's clause (he says he does have a contract to appear in the movie) and he says he's happy about it because he needs down time.

I'd rather not see War Machine until the sequel, anyway. The first movie's already got more than enough on its plate.

Two possible reasons:
1. They couldn't fit him into the story they wanted to tell.
2. They didn't want to make the movie effectively "Iron Man 2.5".

^^Exactly. From Cheadle's brief comments in that interview he seems like he would be interested in appearing in a sequel and is glad he's not filming this one. He probably wants to rest before the grind of "Iron Man 3".

its a good question, ok he is a supporting character, but so is Hawkeye and Loki.

Loki is gonna be the bad guy - it would be pretty silly to get all the heroes together without givin' 'em a clear target.

And Hawkeye isn't even a character yet - he just cameo'ed and got a few one-liners, no real development. War Machine got a whole subplot in Iron Man 2!!!

Hawkeye was in Thor.

I am aware Hawkeye was in Thor, I was saying that he was in it for reasons other than "it wouldnt deter people from seeing the movie" in actual fact he was probaly only in it as set up for The Avengers movie.

This is more logical in the context where someone replied to me that Hulk being in the movie would not deter people from seeing it, and my saying that there should be a better reason for him being in the movie than that.

He's going to be in the movie because that was the plan from the get-go, already in place with the movies that were being made for release in the Summer of '08 before any box office receipts were countable for either IM or TIH. They're following through on their plan, not yanking characters from the team movie on the basis of how well their individual films do. They're lucky that the first film out the gate in this series was a huge success...which probably more than made up for any perceived shortcomings in its companion film that summer.

He seemed pretty big and green to me in the poster art and yeah as stated before this is the character from "The Incredible Hulk" not "Hulk" we're seeing, just merely recast.

Anybody know why he was recast? Did Norton not want the role, or was he too busy with something else?

One version I read was that Norton suggested some changes for the Bruce Banner character, and he was pissed that his suggested openin' (available on the DVD & blu ray) of Banner goin' to the Arctic to commit suicide was cut from the film after it was filmed (complete with most of the FX).

The disagreements between him & Marvel kept him from bein' part of The Avengers.

I don't know, I think Norton would have known what he was (well, would have been) getting himself into when he signed on for The Incredible Hulk. Even back then, Marvel's ultimate goal was to bring everyone together into The Avengers. I don't think Norton would have agreed to do the movie if he hadn't also been willing to do the team-up movie later on.

I think the problems started during post-production of TIH. Norton had either co-written the screenplay or simply rewritten the script done by Zak Penn (ugh), but didn't receive credit for it. Then Marvel insisted on cutting out a ton of character-building scenes and emphasizing action over characterization. Apparently there was like half an hour's worth of material cut out. So that ticked Norton off, and then during negotiations for The Avengers either Norton or Feige decided to cut ties. Whoever ultimately walked away, Feige didn't help his case much when he released a statement pretty much insulting Norton and calling his professionalism into question.
