Can't really blame Feige that much, given that Norton wouldn't promote the movie. After all, it probably would have made a sequel and a Writer's Cut more likely. Win-win.
Norton has form on this sort of thing - it also happened with American History X, where he ended up editing it, while director Tony Kaye was locked out. Clearly Marvel had more clout than the unfortunate Kaye.
