The 8th Doctor

What kind of different things do you think SM is planning for the 50th anniversary?

Good question. Other than something involving the previous Doctors, I'm having a hard time imagining what they could do.

Hopefully it's not just a bunch of specials and retrospectives.

Well yeah they COULD do that, but next to McGann's Doctor, the only thing people really talk about and praise about the '96 movie is the great console room.

Whereas I didn't care for it at all. I actually rather like the movie overall, but I wasn't crazy about the console room design. I miss the gleaming white high-tech console rooms of old.

Yeah it would definitely be cool to see one of those again. Although long term I kinda have to agree with RTD and Moffat that the Doctor just looks too out of place walking around in a white, futuristic, 2001-style console room.

Somehow it just makes more sense that the TARDIS reflect the quirky and colorful personalities of the Doctor himself.

I loved its Jules Verne influence.

Yeah, I guess some aspects of it weren't bad, but I found the primitive-looking console to be ridiculous. Maybe it was just too great a departure for me -- although I didn't mind most of the other changes the movie made. I dunno, maybe it's just that I like bright rooms better than dark rooms.

Well, I've got the movie in my Netflix queue. This thread is prompting me to consider moving it to the top. Maybe if I see it again in light of what I've seen in the new series, I'll react differently.

More ridiculous than the police box exterior?

One of the things I really liked about that Neil Gaiman episode was how half the scrap Tardis components looked like totally mundane objects as if all the chameleon circuits had gone haywire before breaking down.

It's a neat way to portray unfathomably advanced technology as there's no risk of the look dating itself.

The Classic controll room is definitely looking dated. At the time it was supposed to look advanced and alein, I'm sure, but I walk by more abstract archetecture designs on my college campus and I was growing up in the time when computers became household objects.

A couple of circular indents in the wall and a hexagonal center keyboard just don't cut it now a days.

I got to agree with those here who have professed their missing the older consol(s) from the original TV series.
The McGann control room did not impress me that much on first viewing, but I adapted to it.

Its the new series console room looks that defy my best efforts to like them.

I actually enjoy the movie despite a plot that leaves a lot to be desired. McGann is excellent in the role and Eric Roberts is so much fun; I much preferred him to the Master we ended up getting with John Simms.

Same here friend. Roberts' Master was convincingly evil and at the end of the long journey we had gone on with the character since his classic series debut. Simm seemed written more like the Joker as the Clown prince of crime for the 'Mr Saxion' storyline and then played it up even worse for 'The End of Time.'

i think Roberts was terrific and fun as the Master without losing the essence of the character. Thats what I believe anyway.

I much perfer Jonh Simm's Master to Eric Roberts' version, Roberts' performance was too over the top at times and too literal as well, not much in the subtlety in his Master. I also loved the console room, it's retro look made it rather classy and old looking which I do think the TARDIS was meant to be, much like the wood panelled version in the 14th season.

I agree about McGann, but for me it's just not the Master without the Evil Goatee (TM) -- though I loved Sir Derek Jacobi's all-too-brief turn in the role.

Eric Roberts did a decent job in the role, but he was just a little too cartoonishly evil for my taste.

And I think the Master needs to have a bit of sophistication to him as well, which Roberts and Sims both seemed to lack.

I definitely agree. The TV Movie was so OTT at times, though, that Roberts fitted in perfectly. Not so with Simms as the new series has had some excellent villains, even over the top ones that worked, and that whole arc was the low point of RTD's run.

Since he's landed the role twice, which of his Masters were better in your opinion?

I wonder what sort of research Eric did?

Maybe he even tried out the part with an English accent for a couple takes?

Eric Roberts watched Doctor Who back in the '70s during the Pertwee era while he was studying drama at RADA so I'm sure he's seen Roger Degaldo's version of the Master.

I love Eric Roberts as the Master, Derek Jacobi as the Master, and John Simm as the Master.

(Not to mention Geoffrey Beever, Anthony Ainley, and Roger Delgado. Basically, I just love the Master in all his forms.)
