The 8th Doctor

"Rose" worked very well as an Introductory episode to the new series. It regenerated the shows core elements and intorduced them slowly. Though in the UK as soon as it was announed it was returning the press began to run stories about who would play the Doctor, the companion would the Dalek's be back. How can you have DW without the Dalek's etc...

DW is fairly big in the UK and it isn't unheard of for stories to appear in the press esp regenerations etc...

and of course the word TARDIS has entered the dictionary, and the BBC managed to win rights to the Police Box shape from the Police.

Yes, it is true Gordon Tipple played the Master for the duration of the opening narrarration, but this was changed for whatever reason to Paul Mcgann, which kind of ruins the suspense of will the Doctor survive this adventure.

There's no suspense. This is Doctor Who. They weren't going to kill the guy off.

Spoiler - Gibbs will survive every episode of NCIS. Even if you see a gun at his head in a trailer. McGarrett is going to walk away from every episode of Hawaii 5-0. No one rationally expected the Doctor to really have been killed in The Impossible Astronaut. The suspense there was how was he going to get out of it. Just like in Columbo episodes we know who dunnit in the first 10 minutes; the point of the show is "how's he going to catch them".

It was safe for them to use McGann because no one expected the Doctor not to survive. Now if they'd used Eric Roberts or even Daphne Ashbrook that would have been different.
