The 100 - Season 2

I've just caught up with this show, and I think it's not bad actually. Thanks to Netflix and CW's mobile ap., I was able to plow though everything to date in a little over a week. The premise is decent enough, production values and visuals are pretty good. My biggest beef is very much in line with Christopher's, characters doing stupid shit for no other reason than to move the story. That's not sharp writing. Also, they could dial back the whole "teen angst" several notches. Doesn't add to the characters and makes everyone look like morons.. Just my two cents....

I think my main complaint was that the events and character actions were too consistently, gratuitously dark for no other reason than shock value, that they're trying to mimic the violence and frequent death of The Hunger Games without understanding that it's a means to an end rather than an end in itself.

Solid episode tonight. The grounders wanting Finn makes sense, but I'm not sure what will happen with all that. I'm glad Lincoln was saved. The stuff at Mount Weather was interesting. I'm glad they've given some layers to the main leader, though his son and evil scientist friend are pretty one-dimensional at this point. Still, nice to see Jasper and crew taking some action to get answers. Next week's episode looks like a good one.

I'm still trying to figure out how blood from someone who's resistant to radiation instantly heals you from radiation burns.

You do realize this is a CW show, right?
I thought the episode was pretty good. I was glad to see that the President of Mt. Weather was actually against killing the kids, it always makes things more interesting when the villains aren't all totally heartless and evil. His son and the doctor on the other hand... They're still good villains though. I enjoyed the stuff with the kids in mount weather. I'm glad to see them doing more than just sitting around hoping to be rescued. Jasper's drooling over the sword cracked me up.
It is interesting to see them setting up a conflict between Jaha and Abby, I didn't expect that.
I was glad to see them bring back Lincoln.
I wonder what will happen with Finn?

^ Agree. The doctors from Mount Weather are bad.
Well, she is a Cylon afterall... ;)

I was a bit disappointed with that. Having Jaha default back to hardened ruthless leader after the evolution he went thru over the Exodus, staying behind, then, miraculous planetfall, felt wrong. Strongly debating what he thought was best for the survivors after being exposed to the harshness of Grounder captivity, would have sufficed, rather than throwing his friend under the bus and trying to take over.

If he'd seen that he was overstepping his bounds and pulled back on his own, rather than force a showdown in front of the acting security chief and guard, eventually backing Abigail's plan would have suited the story far better than what we got...

I think Jaha is just really eager to get to that City of Light he was told about, and feels that's the best option for his people. Hence him pushing so hard to make that happen. It's less that he's scared to stay and fight, and more that he wants to go somewhere else. He just hasn't explained that motivation very well to anyone.

And whatever happened to the coastal people Lincoln wanted the 100 to get to?

I read it as him completely convinced that they didn't stand a chance against The Grounders, so they should just get everyone out of there now.

Your question about the coastal people brings up my one disapointment with the season. I was really hopping we'd get more of an idea of who/what else was on the ground, but so far we've pretty much just focused on Mt. Weather and The Grounders from last season. Although, I guess it could work out pretty well if each season we get a new group. This season is Mt. Weather, so perhaps next season will be The City of Lights?

All that man power pressed against him is making Jaha sweat.

With their technology, a little prep time and some ruthlessness, they can wipe out thousands of enemy soldiers in minutes.

So the midseason finale that I just watched was more teenagey than previous eps but it more than made up for it.

Yes, I am glad they went there and no I did not expect it. Anakin and Padme took a sharp turn.

Yea, they had the "teen angst" set on 11 last night, but the story was pretty good. Glad the writers and the producers had the balls to go there. Given the situation, finally a realistic outcome. Gonna set the tone for the back half.....

I'm most impressed by this show's follow through. I think a lesser show would have had Finn's conduct maybe follow through for an episode or two, where he feels bad about it, but it's ultimately washed away by something good he does or just generally forgotten. But instead, having established the serious actions he took, they made the consequences the resounding theme for the rest of the first half of the season. Shows buy a lot of credit with me when actions truly have consequences rather than just push the reset button to the status quo. Then on top of that, i'm sure there's a million convulated ways they could have ultimately allowed Finn to survive, but none of them would have rung as true as the way the situation actually played out. Kudos to a ballsy move.

Let's not be hasty with the "ballsy" compliments, just yet.

Did anyone notice in the teaser ad for the 100's return next year that, as the Grounders are carrying What's-his-face's body away, his eyes open to look up? Maybe Clarke made a shallow wound to fool the Grounders (or some other plot gimmick) and Prince Caspian is still alive.

Hold the praise until we see what develops next episode.

Finn is dead:

As to the teaser ad, he opens his eyes as the voiceover talks about his death "will haunt [Clarke] until the end of your days", so it could easily be a dream sequence.

That was one hell of an ending. Can't wait to see where they take things from here.

I haven't been watching lately, but I don't see how killing off a character constitutes a daring or surprising move for this show. Killing characters is their go-to move, their first recourse for drama. That's part of why I stopped watching -- because I got sick of seeing violence and shock value used as ends in themselves, and just because I felt they'd exhausted their bag of tricks and didn't have anything interesting to offer me anymore.
