Terminator VI

I thought 12 Monkeys was a time travel story that held up. All his effort didn't change anything.

I'd like to see an upcoming Terminator movie where all of the time travel really rips the universe a new one and there's 3 or for of the same terminator there from different times and none of them know which one belongs there.
Kind of like what happened to Data in We'll Always Have Paris

Like the first Terminator, 12 Monkeys had a loop built into it. Cole as a child saw himself as an adult get shot. And the adult version always remembered it from when they were a child. So it all always happened.

You might disagree with them, but they're still a fundamental part of the story. Kyle falls in love with Sarah based entirely on her legend and a polaroid photo of her. ...A polaroid photo which was taken at the exact moment that she was thinking about how much she loved Kyle.

Again, I disagree completely. We are mid-loop and have no idea how we got to this situation. First time around, it could have been a completely different picture of her, or a similar picture with different context. The John that became a hero initially could have looked like anyone, had any parentage (father) and his story is completely unknown.

Agreeing with @Scout101 100%

That's right, which is why I said it holds up. If someone really were to travel back in time, it would have already happened because they're back there already in the past, it's done. Cole's actions changed nothing, it all happened just as it did because as soon as he was sent the timeline was forever altered and it had always been that way.

Contrast to Terminator, the terminator was trying to change time, like Cole intended to do, but Reese interfered. However, Reese did more than interfere, he altered the timeline himself. Also, even though the Terminator's intent was to make the change by killing Sarah Connor, how could it not have changed the timeline as soon as it killed that punk, killed the other two Sarah Connors, killed 30 policemen, and any other people that got in it's way. The future it left from wasn't the same anyway, which brings up how did it get sent back, then?

Which is my opinion on time travel. Unless there is some extra-temporal anchor, (like a Guardian of Forever or a TARDIS) then once a person goes back in time it's always happened that way because it's in the past.

I haven't watched the first Terminator in probably over a decade, so I don't remember a lot of the details. What gives you guys the idea that there ever was a time where the events of the first movie didn't happen? I thought the whole point of the first two movies was that it was all one giant predestination paradox, and by going back in time Kyle and the Terminator actually set off the chain of events that lead to their future.
From the way I see it, their future wouldn't happen without the time travel. Without Kyle going back John never would have existed, and without the Terminator going back Dyson never would have gotten the arm, and Skynet and the Terminators never would have existed.

That's how I've always seen it. The original Terminator was an absolutely closed loop.

That would imply that the Terminator in 1984 did not try to contact Skynet by leaving it a letter "Back to the Future II" style, and further more that Skynet either did not want to know that changing the past is impossible, or that Skynet was so sure that loops did not exist, that the T-800 didn't even bother trying to send progress reports to the future, forwarning Skynet that Time travel is possible, and useful.

The ultimate endgame must have been to send Skynet itself back to the past... Which would require building massively advanced server farms to hold it's robust AI at the dawn of modern technology in the late 60s, or early 70s.

Whales?

The resistance went back in time to kill all the whales to stop Skynet sending servers and tanks and large tools back in time to build a home for itself in the past.

By movie three, the Terminatrix distributed the computer virus that knocked out the human ability to use convenient tech, which means that it had given up on human giving birth to itself nearly completely... Although the virus was practically an epidural given after the mother's water broke.

I wonder if Skynet specifically sent back the first T-800 in back in order to set off the events that it knew would lead to it's creation? Basically, it was all one giant manipulation on it's part to ensure it's it's own creation.

I don't think so. If it did, then Skynet would simply program the T-800 to get a job with Cyberdyne to ensure Skynet's creation. If the T-800 skipped the whole "kill Sarah Connor" step, then Skynet would've achieved it's ultimate goal of finally ridding itself of John Connor, since he wouldn't have been born (or, he would have at a later date without Sarah having the knowledge to train him from birth to be the savior of the human race).

At least we've once again moved away from the biblical-style subtitles. Three is already too many, even if one of them is spelled all wonky. :)

I like how he says he can neither confirm nor deny Linda Hamilton is back in a new Terminator movie. Erm, they released that photo of her with Mackenzie Davis & Natalia Reyes months ago
