Yes, you don't walk alone here. As a matter of fact, I have made rather a number of real life friends here. I particularly recommend the Lounges - they are the place where the most chatting is going on and you really get to know your fellow posters.
To get promoted: that's a combination of postcount and registration date (there is a minimum time as well as a minimum post count to prevent excessive spamming). To boost post count there are a few spam threads tolerated in every subforum. Most of them are a lot of fun, like for example here at MISC the Avatar Contest game (you enter an avatar fitting a specific topic, the users vote which is the best, the winner decides on the next topic). In the Lounges there are a lot of word games and other interesting threads that are top-secret to anyone but the Lounge Mods and the members of the respective Lounge, so I can't tell you about them. Just you wait, post, get promoted and see for yourselves =)
(My appologies for any typos I might have overlooked - years ago I injured a tendeon in my right hand which didn't heal properly and now I tend to hit adjoining keys or swap letters when my left hand overtakes the right one. I do make a spellcheck but more often than not one or two errors escape my attention. Plus this isn't my native language)
