TBBS and treatment of women

Okay...I fought the impulse to tell this joke, but I can't help it...the joke is forcing its way out of my fingers and into the keyboard...it's telling itself...here goes...

"If Bonz can sniff out weakness, why is she still a Pirates fan?" :D

Thank you, thank you, I'm here all week. :p

Because she picked the teams she grew up around (like almost all sports fans) instead of selecting large-market teams out of a hat, and then rooting for whoever is doing better that week?

yeah, like i was indoctrinated from birth to be a Liverpool FC fan, despite never getting within 30 miles of Liverpool city, by my father.

of course, they ARE the best team in Britain...

Ha, he wouldn't have been taunting me in the 1970s, when I was young and the Pirates were awesome.

Of course, he never did respond to "1960" and "Mazeroski." :D :D :D

I wonder why! The Yankees were supposed to whip our ass in that series. My uncle caught the foul ball before Maz's homerun and got it autographed. He has given said ball to me. :)

I'm a Yankee/Met fan because New York is the only place I can afford to see major league games (got relatives in the area to stay with - saves on hotels and gas. Plus, I hate long car trips). So it was pretty much inevitable. And even though the Royals games are all on TV here, I don't watch them, because I bloody *hate* the Royals TV broadcasters.

And Bonz...if you think my Pirates joke was a taunt, then please don't read my last entry in the VOY Caption Contest. :alienblush:

Right, because the Yankees' broadcast team is all about skill and professionalism?

Still don't get the attempt to claim TWO teams as your favorite, either. Especially when, given the avatar, you clearly favor one over the other. Whether that's for an actual reason, or because the Yankees are doing better right now is another question, I suppose. Bonz gets to cheer the Steelers (although maybe a sore subject the last week or so ;) ), but has to take her lumps with the Pirates. Doesn't get to just toss the Phillies in too so she can make sure she's always cheering a winner, or at least trying to double her odds. In some of her moods, you CAN picture her throwing batteries at Santa Claus, though... ;)

I think that's what doesn't sit right. Fans of a team (decent fans, anyway) stick with that team through good and bad. They don't just pick another favorite and focus on how great THAT team is, waiting to hop back on the other bandwagon when the other team gets good again. If you at least had a conviction, and stuck with it, it's something we could work with and at least respect...

Seems like Kansas City should probably be cheaper to visit and watch games than NYC, no? Seems like you could buy season tickets for the price of a couple trips to NYC. And you can't hear the broadcast team when you're at the games. Can't speak to that broadcast team, never heard them, but can't be worse than the Yankees team, honestly. Do we REALLY need to play some of those clips again? :guffaw:

Last part really just seems to be that bit sitting wrong because you picked a team at random, without real allegiance, rather than something you grew up with or had some other connection to. And then not only picked the biggest, most storied franchise, but picked another one as a backup. Just because of the Yankees pick though, it becomes suspect bandwagon fan behavior. Like the NFL fans that started watching in the 90s and are Cowboys fans, despite never having been to Texas. Or Patriots (or Steelers, I suppose) fans for those that started watching in the last decade or so. It's annoying because you now identify with the team, use the "we" terms, etc, but you CHOSE your team, you're not really part of it. And as you picked them when they were on top, well... If you had picked the Marlins a few years back, and cheered the World Series in 2003, you don't really get to be quiet about them and start cheering for the Rays in 2008 because you can get cheap flights to Florida. At least pick A team, and don't spread out your bets so that you can always win...

Plus, as a Yankees fan, you were rooting for the Red Sox a couple years back in the playoffs. Sorry, just doesn't seem right.

I never listen to the Yankees radio team - don't like them either. As for the Royals, I was referring to their TV guys.

KC is a three hour drive away. Not exactly conducive to a daily commute.

As for rooting for NY teams: Reread my last post. Then read it again. And when you've done that, do it ten times more.

Maybe you can't have multiple favorites, but you can definitely root for other teams.

F'r example: Tennessee Volunteers are my college team. I live a half hour away, everybody around here wears orange, I've had relatives and lots of friends that went to the university.

However, I also love Penn State, because that's the team my grandfather watched and paid attention to and would complain about and root for and the teams he rooted for I rooted for growing up. I've also had relatives go there too (and it was one of the two colleges my choice came down to for attending).

Same with the Titans and Eagles, respectively. Vols and Titans take precedence, but Penn State and Eagles are second only to them.

FUCK the Phillies. :p Wrong side of the state.

Yeah, it sucks that the Steelers lost. But truly, I was glad they made it past the first round of the playoffs. They were too erratic and relied too much on miracles, or so it seemed.

The Pirates were awesome once and I thoroughly enjoyed being part of their fandom. Hopefully, some day before I kick the bucket, they'll be good again.

And Bonz...if you think my Pirates joke was a taunt, then please don't read my last entry in the VOY Caption Contest.

Dear, taunting/teasing is part of sports fandom. It doesn't bother me and I give back as good as I get, although unlike some sports fans, I won't kick a dog when it's down. To me, that's unsportsmanlike.

okay, so we're cool? Still, don't read the VOY ...

...oh shit, she read it.

Not really sure if it's possible to have two favorite teams in one sport, but I claim two in baseball as well. I grew up a Cubs fan (my Dad is from Chicago). We watched a lot of their games on TV growing up (blame WGN) and lived where the Cubs held spring training. In 1998, the Diamondbacks came to town and I started cheering for them as well. These are my two favorite baseball clubs and I root for both. When they play against each other, I cheer for good plays for both and content myself with being happy for whoever wins.

Half the fun of being a fan is in exchanging taunts. However, I too will not kick a team when it's down

But kicking the Mets when they're down is almost a national pastime in itself! :( At least, it is for David Letterman. He loves to make fun of the Mets...:(

ETA- I don't like the Phillies, either, T'Bonz. Partly because of the Phillies/Mets rivalry, partly because the Philly Phanatic once beat up Mr. Met. :(

How did this get turned into a baseball thread, anyway???

I had no problem rooting for both the Dodgers and Angels until interleague play began in '97. The Dodgers were my first team though, so I had to stick with them as my favorite, even though the Angels play closer to home. I don't really see the contradiction in rooting for both until they play each other, though, since I've loved both teams and attended games of both (especially the Freeway Series exhibition and regular season games between them before and after interleague started) since I was a kid. It's hardly a bandwagon type of thing, since I've liked both in good times and bad. Plus, much of the Angel's coaching staff is made up of some of my favorite former Dodger players, like Mike Scioscia, Mickey Hatcher, and Alfredo Griffin.

Uh... go baseball!

Besides, it's infinitely better than "One for the Thumb."

And as a fan of the Tennessee Vols, I can't mind a team I like having an annoying song - even when it annoys me. I'll just keep ignoring "Fly Eagles Fly" and sing "Rocky Top" with gusto. :p
