Tattoos

^It's really nicely done. I spent an hour last night looking at horrible tattoos -- a real guilty pleasure, because I feel terrible about making fun of other people's ink, but on the other hand, I'm morbidly fascinated by how bad some of them are -- anyway, it was a reminder to appreciate quality!

Every time I read this thread, it makes me want to get a tattoo.

Then I think about how permanent it would be and decide that no, no, I still don't want one.

Lovely artwork, though. :)

Thanks :)

I want to get added to this one, plus it needs a touch up. I want to get Ukraine written in Ukrainian underneath, plus I want to somehow get a fleur de lis and something Canadian incorporated to it. Kind of make it a full leg piece type deal.

That and about a million other possible tattoo ideas

^I know the feeling! There is so much that I want, I'm going to run out of skin if I'm not selective!

It's at this point that you pressure others to get tattoos for you, so you can enjoy them vicariously.

Some may object to later being skinned so you can display and admire the artwork. You can't please everyone.

^Hee, I have two appointments schedules already!

And me? Pressure someone into getting tattooed? Never.

Oh yeah.

Seriously, though. You only have one life, you only have one skin, you only have one opportunity to decorate it. If you are keen on getting a tattoo, I don't think permanence should turn you off. Part of the point of tattoos is saying, "fuck it, do this."

There are plenty of reasons to decide a tattoo is not for you, and I wouldn't try to convince someone who wasn't into tats to get one. But people who are leaning towards it but a little scared? You're the bungee jumper and you bet I'm going to try to push you off the bridge. Yeah, they're permanent, but they're also only as big a deal as you make them. And they're a choice that you get to make. There are a lot of things that have happened to my body that are permanent and that I did not choose and cannot change. Tattoos are my choice, and that's very empowering.

That's an interesting way of putting it. I see the scars (surgical and otherwise) in my life not so much as something that happened against my own choice, but something that is part of the story of my life, and which has deeply personal significance to me. I don't show them openly (it's not possible to show some of them without some kind of indecent exposure order being involved ;)) but they speak volumes in their own way.

I'd add some extra ink to give my life story a bit of extra outward eloquence in the language of someone more expressive than myself, but to make them look even more impressive I'd need to hit the gym a bit more. :)

But I digress.

^I understand that, and there are definitely things that have happened that, while difficult or even traumatic, I draw strength from. However, there are also things that have happened that I don't think made me stronger or wiser or better, they were just bad. I think that's one of the things I like so much about tattoos -- it is a way in which I have absolute control over my body, and like I said before, that's super empowering! :)

Dammit tsq, you just have consistently great taste in tattoos. Really making me sticking to my goal for my mine harder to hold! And that's a pretty sweet one as well, Ashu! I'd like to get something Sweden related at some point as well, but sadly it's been so monopolized by right wing nuts that I'd be taken for one of them if I got one. I'm thinking of like getting the world tree of Yggdrasil from Norse mythology across my shoulders if I like my first few tattoos.

Godammit tsq is talking me into it.

Because I am both a bad influence and a hypocrite:

I'd also say "DO IT" but I'm waiting for the right time and motivation and artist before I do something myself. :)
Now, researching your shop and artist is definitely a must.

That would be beautiful! My brother-in-law actually has a similar design on his back: a celtic tree entwined in a circle. That's a painful area, so be warned!

What would you get, teacake? Still thinking Vulcan script?

I know, I remember how much you said it hurt when you got your star, so that's why it's not the first I'm thinking of getting.

Plan is as this: hit my weight goal and then get my first, a sort of "pale Blue Dot"/ Apollo missions tribute earth on my left shoulder. Want it to be very vibrant turquoises and lush greens amongst the white and black. So gonna have to find an artist that does color well, seem to be a lot around here but not many that does color that much.

Second, provided I don't hate the first experience, is a Ouroboros on my right shoulder. I want them in this positions since it has to do with mythology, but since science is "closer to my heart" the earth will thus be so. But i love mythology as well so would love to have one. Actually would love a Tor's hammer, but again, right wing nuts has hijacked it. And the Ouroboros is akin to the Midgård snake in Norse mythology. Woudl like it to be either silvery or brass-like. Can't really decide.

And then maybe for a third Yggdrasil on my back. Really want to nail down the design for it though. Can't just be a regular ash tree. Gotta have that mythical quality. And lots of color.

I should get something Trek since I have spent many decades of my life in Trek and I also totally embrace how dorky this is. Vulcan script looks cool but truly I never was a Vulcan groupie. I dunno.

I once had this BRILLIANT idea to get Vulcan Hello Kitty but of course when I looked this up turns out to be a not uncommon hipster trend to do stuff to Hello Kitty like that.

I hate starfleet so I can't get the delta symbol, we need cool symbols like the rebels and empire have in Star Wars.

I secretly want a Firefly tatt.

One of my favorite shapes ever is chinese dragons but this is beyond tacky to get as a tattoo.

And then there is the "where" question.

I know that I spent months playing with the design of my tattoo trying to find the balance between unique/meaningful and understated/esthetically pleasing. 17 years later and I'm still quite happy with it.

This is the original artwork and a shot of it 8 years ago...

And recently while working...

The best part about it is that it is a great conversation starter. Lots of people have asked me about it, specially if they've known me for a little while and are just noticing it for the first time.

Here's my newest ink.
...

Nice... but I still like the shoulder one the best (but I also love physics).
