Tattoos - Your Stories

I've been thinking about getting a tattoo, but before I start to seriously consider it I'd like to hear from some strangers on the internets.
Do you have any tattoos?
What did you get?
What does it mean to you?
Any advice for someone considering getting one?

Thanks :D

This is what was asked. The last question, regarding advice, was what I commented upon. Your mileage may vary. Ex-SIL regrets having it now, which is who the "It seemed like a good idea at the time..." quote came from. There was no need for me to assume anything.

Advice was asked for, and advice was given. And you're all free to get whatever tattoos you may or may not want.

My tattoo has never been anything but a pleasure to have. My wife loves it (it was one of the things she found most sexy about me when we met), most people don't know I have it, and when they find out it usually is a nice conversation starter. Even the students at the school I work at think it is great (and were surprised that I had one).

Think about not only if you but also your loved ones would want to look at it ten or twenty years hence, but also how it would look on your skin down the road. Skin stretches, it sags with age, and you may gain or lose weight that would affect how the tattoo looks...and consequently how you might feel about having it.
I don't have to think about it, I've had mine for about 15 years and know what my friends and loved ones think of it. And I don't think my getting older has adversely effected it. This pic was from a climbing field trip I went on last Saturday with my students and it looks fine to me even after all these years.

My skin keeps colour really well, so mine still look pretty good. When I really start to sag how my tattoos look will be pretty irrelevant.

My tattoo has faded a lot since I got it. I'm fine with it, though; I don't really like how they look when they're brand new.
