Tattoos - Your Stories

I would like my tattoo better if it was roughly a half-inch lower. I also would like to get it touched up with some more detail. It was all black when I got it, but it has faded significantly, and I think I'd like to get it outlined and shaded.

^That's actually what I did with the clef tattoo. As I said, I was a teenager when I got it and didn't really research the parlor. In just a few years it was completely faded. The artist who fixed it and who did the hummingbird actually specialized in cover-ups. As you can see she did beautiful work, and five years on they are both still vibrant.

The guy actually offered to make mine more stylized, but I was naive and ill-informed as well, so I told him no. Now I wish I had gone the other way.

This is my newest(2nd) one, it about 3 weeks old.

This is my 1st one

it about 6 years old.

The pain is like a rite of passage, but it's worth noting that some parts of the body are more sensitive than others. My first was on my right breast circling over the nipple. On a man there's (usually) not much tissue there so it transpires it's one of the more painful areas outside of anything near the bone. I nearly had to ask the guy to stop a few times when he was doing the linework.

I have Ka-Tet written on my left arm. I'm a huge Stephen King fan and it also means a lot for me. I travelled a lot as a kid and my family was and still is my hold. Cheesy, I know, but it makes me happy.

I only have one... an arm band.

It is a design I made back in '97 based on the insignia for the Spacing Guild mental and physical training school from the original Dune movie.

I've thought about getting additional tattoos, but just haven't had any design ideas that inspired me to get another one yet.

Do you have any tattoos?

Yes. Five.

What did you get?

I have a Phoenix on my lower back, a bee on my left foot with *Buzz* under it, a Celtic cross with roses around the knot and a ribbon with *Elizabeth* on it on my right foot, a blue lily and a pink lily on my back up thigh connected by an infinity knot, and two tiny tiny blue foot prints on the bottom of my inner right ankle with with the name *William* under it.

What does it mean to you?

The Phoenix was my growing up and becoming an adult.
The bee w/ *Buzz* is for my late father, all of us girls(except the 16 year old) have it and my two little brothers have a hornet with *Buzz*
The Celtic cross is for my daughter Elizabeth who died after her birth.
The lilies are my marriage, lilies were the flowers and there was one pink and one blue one on top of out wedding cake.
The footprints are for my son William.

They all have a meaning to me.

Any advice for someone considering getting one?

Make sure you are absolutely sure it's what you want before you get it. Otherwise you could end up regretting it.

Reviving this thread for my new tatt. I got it on a whim. As I explained in the pics thread: I was walking around Alphabet City today, listening to the Buzzcocks, passing the punks and the crackheads and the yuppies and trying to imagine the neighborhood as it was at its height in the 1970s and 80s, when I passed a tattoo parlor. It just felt so right:

One of my favorite quotes.

Looks nice... and like it hurts still.

One of my favorite quotes.
So what does that quote say to you?

I'm not asking where it is from, but what you see in it (and what emotional significance it has) that touches you so much that you'd want it this close to you. I'm a little surprised to see you use words over a graphic, so I'm guessing there is a lot behind those words.

^It doesn't hurt that bad, though it was a more tender area than either of my previous tatts. I had it done this afternoon.

Anyway, as to personal meaning: I need to be reminded that neither beauty nor truth lie in perfection.

Also, Francis Bacon was the bomb.

I wouldn't feel comfortable with permanent body art, because tastes change and I might not like having a Cardassian Union emblem ten years from now. ;)

However, I would not mind having something done in henna someday, just for fun. :) I could have it for a time and then it would be gone later.

What good timing to resurrect this. On an impulse I got a tattoo I've been considering for quite some time last Friday: chai (life) in Hebrew on my left breast below the collarbone, about the size of my palm. It's mostly healed now and looks fab.

TSQ: your new tat is most excellent!!

Sean: I'd like a chai too. I wore one (on a chain) for years until i had to give it back (it had been a boyfriend's). It's a beautiful symbol.

HoneyB: the one you and your sibs have for your dad is awesome. And my sincerest condolences regarding your baby. {{{{squishiest of squishy hugs}}}}

And regarding my tat, i still love it (for all the naysayers who think tats are a mistake) and am so happy to have it!

^^^Thanks!

Now there is a quote I'd consider having as a tattoo (if I was going to do a non-graphic one).
You have my permission, but you must credit me every time someone asks who said it! ;)

You only live once. The way I figure it you've got to get them while you're young and beautiful too! I've had my first for ten years, and I'm still happy with it. The same goes for my second tat, which I've had for five years now. Weird, I just realized I've gotten each tattoo five years apart.

tsq that is particularly wonderful. I love the fonts, it is perfect.
I had fun arranging them. There was a kinko's near the tattoo parlor, so after I got the urge to get the tatt I just ran in there and used one of their computers to quickly design it. I think I threw it together in about 5 minutes!
