Taking down the tree....

I always find it depressing when the stuff comes down, especially when I was a kid because that meant I'd have to go back to school soon.

My tree always goes up the weekend after Thanksgiving and comes down the weekend after New Years. Basically, the tree is down and everything has been put away already, even with my being cursed with a nasty respiratory right now. I love all of it being up but if I leave it up any longer than that my OCD starts kicking in. My quest to "dust underneath all of it" and "organize it" gets so great it has to go back in the box.

My decorations and tree go up beginning the day after Thanksgiving. It takes me two days or three to fully decorate.

I begin undecorating on New Year's Day. Now that I have health issues, it takes me two days instead of one to get it all done.

I hate undecorating, so am always glad when it's done. The house looks so bare though!

Slightly off topic, but does anyone around here like to vary the look of their tree when they decorate it (different coloured lights, different decorations, etc.) or do most prefer it looking pretty much the same year to year?

I like the continuity, but a little variety makes it more interesting. Next year I'd like to do something I haven't seen since I was a kid, putting angel hair around the lights to give them a soft halo effect.

Tree always goes down on Jan 6 for me, though I do start putting away ornaments a few days before. I have a lot, so that takes time!

I hope Eddie's going to get to keep his Christmas moose!

Oh, yes. That is his toy now. I just saw him in his bed cuddling with it.

I actually keep some things out all year- a few of my Star Trek ornaments, some of the toys.

The thing I dread putting away the most is my Spode children's tea set:

The dolls and table stay out, with a different tea set, but I love the Spode.

Oh, well, if it's put away, there's less chance of it being broken.

Every year I buy new ornaments to add to the collection. And to make room for those new ones, one set gets retired. I also vary the arrangement I put into the top of the tree and rearrange the other decorations I put out. The only thing I have kept the same for more than three years is my stockings. I love the ones I have and can't seem to give them up.

However, next year, I am thinking about getting a new tree and going with more of an "Old Fashioned Christmas" look. For the last couple of years I have done this "Elegant Red/Gold Christmas" look and I am tired of it. I want to get some of those knitted sock stockings and drag out some of my "old fashioned toy ornaments". I need to find some blown glass ornaments too.

^ Is that Locke's eye?

Locke? Who is this Locke you speak of.

That's Clearly Admiral Pressman's eye.

I don't even know who you are, anymore. :shifty:

Amen, brother. :D

Anyhoo, I took the Christmas tree down on the 2nd. It only took about 5 minutes, but I hated doing it. I love Christmas and even celebrating it from November to January 1st it doesn't seem long enough. Took down the outside decorations too, and all the wreaths. House looks cold and bare.

The Roman Calendar has Epiphany celebrated today in the US. Pshaw! Epiphany is on January 6th, with the close of the Christmas season occurring the Sunday after with the Baptism of the Lord.

Thus, my stuff will stay up for the rest of this week and come down on the 9th.

We go out and cut our tree down two weekends before Christmas and it generally comes down New Year's Day. This year, since we had family over for the New Year we left it up until the 2nd.

Oh, good question. We mix it up every year. Actually, back in the old days, when we were first together, we didn't have enough ornaments, etc., do be able to mix it up. But as the years have gone on and we've added to our collection, we actually couldn't begin to fit all the ornaments on 1 tree. And we have different types of lights: all white "twinkle" lights; multicolored "twinkle" lights; and multicolored "big bulbs", which are the "C-7" lights I remember from when I was a kid. We change the type of lights we use each year, which sort of dictates the other decorations we put on the tree.

And this year we did something completely different for us: very minimal and mono-chromatic tree. All white lights with silver and crystal type ornaments. Then I got these branches with red berries and inserted them into the tree here and there for some "pop". We were really happy with the tree this year, but it was completely different from anything we've ever done before.

I'll have to post a picture when I get home.

For me it's usually variations on a theme. Some years it's all red and gold; some years it's red and rustic; some years its purple and gold. I do like to vary the theme though. After having looked through all the photos of the trees and decorations here, I do feel that Americans go to town more with their decorating than the British. But I do feel that in recent years we are catching up a little bit.

Tree and decs go up the weekend son breaks up from school and come down before his birthday on the 5th Jan. ~ obviously apart from the fairy lights which stay up all year :D

This year it had to come down earlier due to Man's acquirement of a new, ugly, bigger TV on the 3rd, which required the whole living room to be re-arranged to fit it in! :klingon:

And this year the colour theme was silver and black, with occasional special baubles that we'd gathered over the years :)

My trees are down. :( My cat is so confused. He looked at me like "Where the hell are my trees, human?"

So true! My Squeak is so confused about the changing of the rooms and even more put out about the snow ~
cat's, I have decided, are not comfortable with change:lol:

I still have not taken my Christmas tree down. I will probably do it tomorrow or the day after. I didn't get much time to enjoy it, as we were so busy this December.

Besides, it's a fake tree, so there's no particular rush.
