Sybok. Do you think he was doing the right thing?

I think Sybok is a case of “the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.” I think he wanted to possibly do something good, but went about it the wrong way.
He says he needs a starship. Given that McCoy was recently trying to charter a flight one would imagine going to Nimbus III might have not been the best choice to meet his needs.

Besides Kirk, Bones and Spock having their own "painful" memories talked about in Star Trek V, what do you think Sulu's and Uhura's "pains" were since they did act kind of weird after they were left alone with Sybok when they got back on the Enterprise?

According to the novelization, if memory serves, Sulu was on a colony during an attack. It's been a while since I've read the novelization...

^That's my recollection as well. Sadly, I don't recall any depiction of Uhura's encounter with Sybok. Though, that would ruin the element of surprise in the scene with Scotty.

Probably something akin to Uhura's nightmares from an episode. Or not being able to speak. There was a comic that did a better job of exploring this idea.

It’s not that Sybok was right or wrong. He had a vision and he fully bought into it. What I wanna know is why Kirk wasn’t even a little interested. Imagine if the film played out much the same way until the revelation.

Kirk: “Your vision?”
Sybok: “Given to me by God. He waits for us on the other side.”
Kirk: “By…God?”
Sybok nods eagerly.
McCoy: “Jim, you can’t honestly believe God is talking to him.”
Kirk: “It’s obvious he believes it.”
Spock (concentrating): “Sybok does seem to be in contact with an intelligence of some sort. Extremely powerful, directed solely at him. But I can feel it.”
McCoy: “That’s crazy.”
Kirk: “Is it? Whether or not it’s actually God is irrelevant. What matters is that it’s an unknown life form. We have to seek it out. It’s why we’re here.”
Sybok smiles, allows the doors to open and gestures to the corridor.
Sybok: “After you, Captain.”

At that point, it becomes the crew's journey.

Ha, fair point. And I get that wasn't the story Shatner wanted to tell. But since he did finally go along with it, it would have been nice for it to see it tickle his explorer bone.

Or something.

Ew...

Sybok is one of the most interesting guest characters in all 13 movies.

I’ll fight anyone on that point.

"Sybok. Do you think he was doing the right thing?"
No. If he had the power to get anyone devoted to his quest, he should have used said power to simply ask someone to get him a ship. The film establishes that people from other worlds visit Nimbus III and Paradise City even has a communications station that can call for help. At least if he did it this way, fewer people would have been hurt and he likely would have gotten a ship that actually functioned properly.

It might have been an interesting twist if Sybok thought the ship had been legally obtained for him (this is a problem if it's a Starfleet vessel, though...) and that it turned out his followers were so devoted to him (unbeknownst to him) that they were the ones who committed the problematic actions without his knowledge. And a bit of a reflection on how religion can go astray from the intent.

Though it might be too depressing if it turned out that Sybok was not only duped by God but had been 'betrayed' by his own followers as well.

Interesting that both sybok and Spock were contacted by external intelligences (vger and …er….God). Runs in the family?

Is Sarek hiding such a contact in his past? Will Michael be contacted by some one? Spock's son with Zarabeth in the novels?

Besides taking command or whatever of the Enterprise for awhile til getting to that planet.

Do you think he was doing the right thing searching for a planet that created all life or whatever?

I mean, he was being misled by a super-being but I imagine he was otherwise a nice guy.

His powers are suspiciously similar to mind-control.
