Supernatural5x7 "The Curious Case of Dean Winchester" Spoilerish

^

Dorian

Monster Movie was the one episode that really didn't fit with season four. Especially when it aired out of order, it didn't fit the world that they were now in. And as such I shouldn't like it.

But I loved that episode, it was a very innocent, wonderful homage to various media (similar to Hollywood Babylon but in my opinion better).

But I do really love that episode. So there can be exceptions for me. Episode that really don't fit their season.

And while I have been critical of various moments of this season (usually character points) as a whole I really like this season. But in comparison to last season, this season has declined in quality. Doesn't mean I still don't love the show, but so far it isn't as great a show.

Lets compare

Lazarus Rising (4 stars) versus Sympathy for the Devil ( 3.5 stars). Lucifer Rising is the stronger more focused episode (This season's really could have been two episodes).

Are You There God? It's Me Dean Winchester (3 Stars), versus Good God, Y'All (3 Stars). I actually think I like this season just slightly more do to the great production of this episode and the strong character moments (but the first 10 really felt rushed).

In The Beginning (4 Stars) versus Free To Be You and Me (3 Stars). Not contest, In the Beginning is a classic. This season short changed two stories that each should have been full episodes.

Metamorphosis (3 stars) versus the End (3.5 stars almost 4). No contest, but I do give props for the great conflict between the brothers last season and how they reflected it in the A plot.

Monster Movie (3.5 Stars) versus Fallen Idol (2.5 Stars). Monster Movie ignores the character plight of the boys but still delivers a classic. Fallen Idols says all teh right things (and is better then I expected), but I felt the character moments were forced and rushed (though very happy they were there).

Yellow Fever (2.5 stars) versus I Believe Children Are Our Future (3.5 stars). Thats more like it, and while I harped (endlessly) about one character moment, I loved this episode. Yellow Fever was just filler, but that was how you tie your A plot to the situations of the characters (hell If you count the outtake raise it half a star).

It's a Great Pumpkin Sam Winchester (3.5 stars), versus The Curious Case of Dean Winchester (2.0-2.5 stars hasn't set in yet). I love last season episode, even though it started rather soft, but after the first 20 minutes its all 4 star material. This year's is the first misstep in my opinion of the season.

But lets be far, season 2 already had No Exit (Yikes), season 1 had Hook Man (plus the average episode wasn't nearly as good), season three already had Magnificent Seven and Red Sky at Morning (arguably the worst episode they have ever produced) and only one episode to this point that matches or exceeds the 3 episodes I rank as 3.5 Stars, Fresh Blood).

In fact when I grade on a ten point scale, only season 4 is averaging higher at this point, with season 1 and 3 not even close (though season 3 at this point episode 7 really starts to churn out some strong material).

When I just rewatched the story of the anti christ, I want to just give a shout out (because I don't think I originally did) to the great performance from the actress who played the boys birth mother. I don't think a single female role in the first season was played as well (and there are couple of roles I really liked in that first season Meg, the Sheriff, Missouri, Madison or the mother played by Amy Acker).

And I think I have been focusing on the parts I dislike more then normal because with this possible being the last season, I just want the show to be as perfect as it can be, not because I think its going down the toilet. Far from it. Hell even with this episode, I think some very, very minor changes would have improved it dramatically.

She was awesome. I loved every single scene she was in.

And a few other sites are reporting nice things about next week, so here's hoping.

Why is it with SN that the only episodes they release (besides the first and last episode of the season) are their "humor" off beat episodes?

And they all get great press. Yet they never seem to release screeners for their great "dramatic" episodes. I hate that.

Because as much as I love some of those off beat episodes, I will take their great dramatic episodes over them every single day of the week.

Apparently this is an offbeat humor and a dramatic episode airing this week. It wasn't just Alice Jester raving about it. Cynthia at SF universe got a prescreener as well, and she was raving, too.

Well I loved Monster at the end of the Book, and I really liked Mystery Spot (all complaints aside), and both of those have the very silly to the very, very dark. And both very much played into that season's story arc.

Season four was the show's best year so far. It wasn't perfect there was too much vascillating between quality each week it seemed. You had a solid episode like Lazarus Rising followed by a middling effort in my opinion like It's me God Dean Winchester then a solid effort with In the Beginning then a weak offering with Metamorphosis.

I also thought season four did a better job with plot and how it used Misha Collins. This season needs more Misha and Castiel. I actually find myself pretty riveted when he is onscreen and I think he outshines the main actors. In fact, all the angel characters last season I thought were characters I'd rather see on a more regular basis.

I think Misha was an inspired addition as well. So far, though the present season isn't complete, season four ranks as my favorite. The writers are caught between a rock and a hard place with Misha, because for as many people like you and me who really enjoy the character, there are large segments of the fandom who actively resent him and think he's "replacing" Sam, which isn't true of course. SPN fandom is severely fragmented. Two many Deangirls, Samgirls, Wincest girls, and Castielgirls. Me, I'm a Supernatural girl, but some folks take their love of a particular character to ridiculous, histrionic heights. This is why I don't resent it at all when the meta episodes making fun of the fans are aired, because so much of it is scarily close to the truth.

I just with that Heroes would go ahead already and dump Adrian Pasdar so SPN could make use of him. He'd fit in.

Me as well. Both are in my all time top ten.
1.On The Head of a Pin
2.In My Time of Dying
3.Nightshifter
4.Lazarus Rising
5.No Rest For the Wicked
6.Mystery Spot
7.Monster at the End of This Book
8.Born Under a Bad Sign
9.Monster Movie
10. The End

I liked the episode last Thursday, thought it was nice to finally see Sam be the one who 'saves the day' so to speak.

I think it's my inner Sam-girl coming out, but I really don't like how they've been treating Sam's character the last couple of seasons. To me at least it does seem like he's been pushed aside both for major Dean plot points AND for the angels, including Castiel. I liked the show better when it was just the brothers.

While I like Misha Collins and think he's a brilliant actor it really seems odd to me that they'd push a third person into the main cast late in the game. Castiel had more air time in In the Beginning than Sam did, and Sam's one of the two main characters! He was also in The End more than Sam (although I can't complain too much as Sam's part was pretty awesome).

Looking back I think Season 2 was probably my favorite, seemed like it was more balanced. It was good to see character growth in Dean during season 4, but it was just a little too...heavy handed for me almost.

What would be my top ten? Lord. I do agree on some of those In My Time of Dying, On the head of a Pin, Born Under a Bad Sign, Monster at the end of the Book. But seriously No Rest for the Wicked (I think its really good, but not the best), same with Monster Movie, and Mystery Spot.

Damn so many good episodes to choose from.

What a shitty episode. Bad pacing. Weak character motivation. Predictable plotting. And trying to make an evil monster sympathetic.

Probably the worst episode I've seen from them.

I'd like to see an Adrian Pasdar version of Lucifer if they truly kill his character off from Heroes, they seemed to have dropped the whole Sylar as Nathan thing

<--- Yes, there are guys that like the show too (raises hand)

I'm not fond of the "filler" episodes either, but fortunately I can skip them on the DVD. Part of the problem now is that I'm watching the episodes as they air, and with a week between shows I get a little impatient.
