Supernatural is fantastic!

I think DS9 was the last series I really liked (Battlestar Galactica was a little pretentious for my tastes) but Supernatural has definitely become my favorite series of the 2000s. Does anybody in the UK if/when the sixth season will be shown?

I believe it starts Mid-January on Living.
I've recently re-watched everything from the first season on and though I had my doubts about season 6 it's shaping up to be a decent season, though not the best, so far at least.

I've been enjoying Season 6, but there's just something off about it so far...

I'm not really sure what to point to, but I think it's the fact that I haven't seen the old Sam this season. (For obvious reasons)

I'm hoping that the search goes somewhere.

I wouldn't say it is fantastic. It is too uneven in terms of quality--I enjoyed Seasons 1 and 4 the most--with the 4th being its best.

Season 3 was all over the place, S5 was very disappointing with only the occasional gem and S6 has been the very definition of mediocre--careful to not do anything awful but not going out of its way to be good or great either.

It definitely needs to end this season but knowing the CW they'll keep it around for another year with Smallville ending. Apparently CW doesn't actually watch SN otherwise they'd realize that resurrecting the dead isn't a good thing.

I have been pleasantly surprised by this season as it hasn't been the season I expected, and I have only been disappointed by one episode (the season opener), though I don't think we have had a great episode yet. And I like that for the most part (minus one real episode) the show has stayed on target with its material. No jumping to numerous humor episodes that aren't really related to the on going story line (my biggest probably with the fall of season 5).

I have missed Sam a lot, though.

Actually Startrekwatcher based on your reviews I would think you find this season the most consistent. Just that you really haven't liked a lot of the show this season at all. Just consistently mediocre in your opinion.

I saw this thread and wanted to check it out since I'm considering watching this show.

Is it outright 'horror' in nature...or does it have some X-Files-ish 'supernatural' occurrences as well?

I can take 'some' horror, but I don't want to be scared out of my wits with every episode. X-Files-ish supernatural stuff is fine though.

Thoughts?

Its a show where the supernatural elements are based on the two main things, mythology of earth, and folklore. While its scares are probably close to some of the monster of the week episodes of the X-Files, it features a bit more gore, and its scares aren't based on either extraterrestrials or genetic mutations which are the bulk of the X-Files.

Angels, Demons, Ghosts and spirits versus genetic mutations and aliens. Is really the heart of the difference between the two shows "creatures".

AS for actually scarring some one, like a really great suspense movie, on occasion but not often. Its not very easy to manage the atmosphere really needed to provide a great scare.

Thanks very much for your replies, mswood. That was very helpful. I sort of figured it wouldn't have to do with the ET stuff like X-Files...but more the monster/mutant sort of stuff. Although I wasn't expecting angels & demons.....

I don't like to be on the edge of my seat in fear all the time - it's exhausting to watch a show like that. But I liked The X-Files and I liked Buffy quite a bit -great shows.

Not sure if Supernatural would be a good fit. I like vampire movies (not the Twilight stuff, but Underworld, for example), The X-Files, Buffy, etc. But I don't like slasher movies and movies where it's one long 'escape/kill a big scary monster' either. Not a fan of Halloween XXII or whatever number they are on these days - you get the idea.

What do you think?

it just started over on tnt here in dallas tx.,. and, I just watched the pilot i thought it was cool looking forward to the rest of the series.

While I hate slasher films, can't stand them. I love SN, and its all due to the relationship between the brothers. As for the gore, there is some, especially later in the shows run (say its first two years, very little real gore, just like in the X-Files you saw more as the series progressed then at its beginning).

But the show has had a few scenes that have really grossed me out. Not often but a few.

Demons play a real central part of the show as they are the primary villains of the arc material for its first five years (even if they don't appear in a ton of episodes). Angels are briefly hinted upon in one episode and are very much a part of the show starting in season 4.

The otehr thing that sets it up different then the X-Files but a little closer to Buffy is that one character uses humor a lot (not to the level of so many of the Buffy characters, but its certainly a big part of the older brother), and like the X-Files as the show progressed they actually started doing full out humor episodes. In general I am not a big fan of those types of episodes (though some I love), but critics and general fans seem to love them.

While the creatures might be closer to Buffy, but the show has several major differences. Its rooted (even with the humor it has) much more in real drama of the situations, and its characters. Buffy rarely was (the Body is Buffy being a drama and a damned good one, but that was very, very rare). If you liked Angel (and angel was darker then Buffy, but still a bit campy at times), SN is especially after the end of its first season darker then Angel.

Thanks again mswood! That gives me a lot to go on! Sounds like I might give it a try. I can take a little gore - just not all the time.

And yes, I liked Angel...and know what you mean by it's tone being darker than Buffy's. And I'm good with Angel - quite enjoyed it. If it's a step darker than Angel, I can take that. I just didn't want to get into an ongoing horror movie that never ends, you know?

And I like the idea of the interjection of a bit of humor here and there too. That sounds good.

I really appreciate you taking the time to address my concerns - I think I will give the show a try. I'm running out of new shows to watch and have been looking for something new (to me).

I really consider Supernatural to be the spiritual successor to The X-Files. 2 people going places and investigating strange goings on is the focus of the show really, but the story arc is more tightly done than the x-files.
It's very much just supernatural goings-on with the occasional horror episode, there is a lot of humour to the show so even in the scariest episodes there's usually something to lighten the tension and make you laugh.
The episodes range from horror to creepy to out and out laughs. Definitely worth checking out if you're an X-Files fan I think.
