I have never bought into the idea some fans have a central part of the mythos is the tragedy in Krypton destruction was it was perfect utopia. I do not care what version, going back to beginning no on the council believes Jor-El! They ignored their own looming demise. Kryptonians had a hugely flawed culture. Most versions that claim otherwise ignored their own text. Not just Zod, all versions. The very idea of the Phantom Zone is very messed up. It’s living in Hell. Really the use of Krypton in most stories is Superman having to deal with the side effects of its mistakes.

That is all true but I think bit of a gap between "It is not a upotia" and "kill anyone who gets in your way".

I do not personally have an issue with the change but can see how others might.

Box Office: ‘Superman’ Saves the Day for DC Studios With Solid $115M-$120M Domestic Opening

James Gunn‘s Superman is headed for a possible record domestic box office debut of $115 million to $120 million after topping Friday’s chart with $56.5 million, including a hefty $22.5 million in previews.

The movie appears to be succeeding in rebooting DC Studios and its most iconic comic book franchise. Gunn is in a unique position, being both the film’s writer-director and the co-head of the Warner Bros.-owned DC, which he co-runs with Peter Safran. Overseas, Superman is launching to $100 million-plus from 78 markets after earning $40 million midweek from its first raft of international markets for an early global total of $96.5 million through Friday.

Superman will be the first superhero film to cross $100 million in its North American bow since Marvel Studios and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine launched to $211 million in summer 2024 (“superhero fatigue” has become part of the Hollywood lexicon). And it’s the first DC title to cross $100 million in eight long years since Wonder Woman debuted to $103.3 million in 2017.

And if the $225 million tentpole comes in north of $116.6 million, it will beat Zack Snyder’s 2013 film Man of Steel ($116.7 million) to rank as the biggest domestic launch ever for a solo Superman pic, not adjusted for inflation.

I just got back from seeing it, and on the whole it gets a solid 8.5/10 in my book. My main caveats were too much language for a film aimed at families, and characters like Hawkgirl, Perry White, Cat Grant, and Steve Lombard all getting shafted. I saw one headline that read "Krypto stole the show, but Superman brings the soul", and I think that's very appropriate. This is now my second favorite of them all, after the 1978 original.

BTW, Lex's floor manager, the guy who hilariously cautions "Safety first, people!" as they're evacuating the command center, is played by Terence Rosemore.

The character's name is "Otis."

Otis Berg

That was his last name in the Smallville Season 11 comics too.

As far as I can tell, he's never been Berg outside of the Smallville comics.

Yes I know what both are referncing.

There's also an Otisburg neighbourhood in some depictions of Gotham.

How was Hawkgirl shafted? Hawkgirl was anything but shafted in the film I saw.

The rest, too, can you explain what you mean?
I meant by comparison to the other supporting characters. Green Lantern and Mr. Terrific seemed to get more time than Hawkgirl, while Cat Grant and Perry White barely seemed more than cameos. Jimmy had an interesting and funny role to play, but Steve Lombard was practically "blink and you'll miss him".

"Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen" got a lot of action in the old comics - women seemed to find him very attractive, often to humorous effect. This is the only live-action incarnation I can think of that leans into that idiosyncrasy of the character.

Though his main girlfriend was Lucy Lane, who mostly treated him like something she found on the bottom of her shoe.

She usually only came ‘round to treating him decently when she perceived a rival, as in the cover you added above.

Ah, such an enlightened time for the portrayal of female characters. But then again, the book was more or less a sitcom, not to be taken too seriously.

I didn't have a stopwatch going, but I thought Hawkgirl had lots of time, roughly comparable to the time Guy had. She even had her own scene where she chased down and disposed of that president. I loved Hawkgirl, definitely want more. I got much more of her than I expected in a Superman movie.

Perry actually did things, too. I would not have objected had Perry gotten more time, but he and Cat did have sufficient time, Cat especially so, who was repeatedly centered upon.

I gotta say, I never expected to read that someone would be knocking points off of the movie for not giving Steve Lombard more time. Live and learn! Lombard was the last one Perry picked to go in Mr. Terrific's flying saucer right, who was left without a seatbelt? That got some laughs. I laughed. He was actually there, garnering laughs. Being the butt of a joke isn't the same as getting shafted.

I guess mileage varies!

Oh, I knew going in that Superman, Lois, Lex, and Krypto were going to be the main leads - the marketing and title alone were painfully obvious.;) But in terms of building a world, I felt like some moderately-detailed scenes may have been cut for time, especially concerning Hawkgirl and any one from the Planet besides Lois & Jimmy.
