Spoilers Supergirl - Season 2

Why not? What does "mental maturity" have to do with it? Actors haven been playing younger and older than their actual ages since acting began.

Show me one example where someone in their late 20s was able to convincingly portray someone in their mid-30s (or even older).

It's called acting for a reason.

^ All the acting talent in the world isn't going to compensate for mental maturity that just isn't there.

This is a silly objection. There's tons of examples of actors playing older than themselves - 'mental maturity' is one of the least important aspects for what's actually on the screen.

Matt Bomer was a Superman candidate for the movies way back when.
Matt Bomer voiced Superman in the animated movie Superman: Unbound, and his Lois was Castle's Stana Katic. I could easily see both of them reprising those roles in Supergirl.

Superman Coming to Supergirl

Well, I think it was bound to happen sometime. I hope they write it in a way where they address the concerns and then maybe send him down a time portal to somewhere away from Supergirl so it can still be Supergirls show.

I'm kidding of course, but one of the things I hope doesn't happen is this becoming Superman with Supergirl as a side character. It's one of the big reasons why whenever there was talk about Superman showing up, I didn't want to say anything because I don't want Superman to be there.

I really doubt that is going to happen because the entire arc of season 1 was having Kara become a hero in her own right and not have to be in the shadow of her cousin. In fact, this is also part of the the feminism theme of the first season. I've been rewatching the season with my daughter have noticed that practically every episode has a serious feminist message and often a little speech by Cat Grant or Kara to stress the point. Especially in the first few episodes this message is often written as how Supergirl is treated differently than her cousin.

The show is not going to spend an entire season exploring this issue only to undo it in the second. When Superman shows up, it will be as an equal of Supergirl. Even better, most likely Kara will need to be somebody for him to lean on emotionally rather than the reverse.

Can they do American?

He apparently does one in Bastille Day.

@Kai "the spy" Richard Madden is 29, not 30, and there's no way a 29-year-old could convincingly play somebody in their mid-30s (35/36). They don't have the maturity needed.

Oh, yeah, one year makes all the difference. Or another two weeks, as is the case with Madden, who's birthday is on June 18.

It's called acting for a reason.

That, too.

Back when it was still in development, the show was specifically looking for 26-year-old actresses to play a 24-year-old character (Kara). If it were as easy to 'play older' as you guys are suggesting, there would've been no reason for them to put the "26 years old" minimum age cap in place when searching for their "Girl of Steel".

He's plenty mental.
The dude's done like Shakespeare and shit.
(He's actually currently in Kenneth Branagh's production of Romeo & Juliet with Derek Jacobi and Dame Judi bloody Dench so he ain't even available but that was a silly complaint on your part)

In this scene, the mid-20 Hayley Atwell plays Peggy Carter in both her mid-30s and her mid-90s.

I think looking older would be a lot more important than "mental maturity". They're probably going to want someone who looks convincingly older than Melissa Benoist.

Matt Bomer would be a good pick. Of course they could just as easily go with a complete unknown.

It entirely depends on the actor. Some actors read younger than they really are, some read older.
Some seem to hit 50 in their mid-30's and stay there until they reach 70 or so (see: DeForest Kelly, Max Von Sydow et al.)

Whoever they go with, I don't think there's any danger of them getting Welling to reprise the role. Maybe if they need someone to play one of Superman's robot drone duplicates, or say, a plank of wood he'll get the call.

If Lois shows up too, it needs to be someone that can go toe-to-toe with Kat Grant's character. If they want to have fun with the ironic stunt casting, I think Lucy Liu might just make a very good Lois Lane. ;)
